Error code help
Anyone have any additional information related to this code? The transmission goes into safe mode while downshifting out of 6th gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, monto |

An independent shop has recommended I replace the mechatronics unit. From the link above it appears as though many others have had good luck when changing the mechatronics albeit with different symptoms. Since the dealer recommended I replace the entire transmission at a cost of $7,800 I asked that they open a PUMA case to see if BMW NA is aware of any similar issues and if they can confirm this should resolve the issue. Any comments on the likelihood of the mechatronics being the culprit? TIA, monto |

Sorry, no. BMW (and other mfgs) have a common practice of not repairing trannies. Fine when they are paying the warranty- but not so good as the model ages.
You are right to go to an indy- especially if they have experience with the inside of these transmissions... I'd be interested to hear of BMW/PUMA gives you much guidance... GL A |

The PUMA case response was "it definitely needs a new transmission." while I didn't see any additional details in the response, the dealer said they can't share it, the SA said that the response included the following;
Excessive fill rate for clutch C. Shows internal wear in the clutch pack. I'm pretty frustrated but think I am going to move forward with allowing the indy to replace the mechatronics. Does this seem foolish? |

Model, age, miles, transmission maintenance???????
I'd really find a transmission shop, not just "an indy". If they are just guessing at valve body, you might We know $7800 is silly, but I am guessing you can get it for $5-5500k by shopping well. $1000 to install perhaps? (Dunno, guessing) What is the cost they are quoting you??? I see the valve body at $3k...NO WAY I would pay for that on a guess. A few interesting threads: Mechatronics DIY (Transmission valve body) - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums BMW Transmission Repaired Fast & For Less at Leale’s In San Jose « Leales's Transmissions, Auto Repair, RV Solutions, Auto Body & Paint http://www.zftranspart.com/images/custom/mecha.pdf Again, find a shop that works on ZF transmissions- NOT a "BMW Shop" necessarily, but a transmission shop. A PS Found these guys: http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=c...parent=54&pg=1 Interesting product offerings, including a tranny fluid change kit: http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=p...=190&parent=50 I'd call these guys up, see if they have a customer in Mass, a shop, they can recommend...etc, etc.. ard, thanks for the info and recommendation. I've read many of the links you posted but I like the idea of calling for a recommendation.
The indy I mentioned is in fact a transmission shop and not simply a BMW indy. They quoted me $2,200 to replace and reprogram the mechatronics module. He admits it's not a guaranteed fix. He also says that the next step would be to rebuild for an additional $1,800. This is essentially a $4,000 gamble as you point out. This would come with a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty. The other option is to replace the transmission with a remanufactured unit from BMW at the dealer at a quoted cost of $7,350. I'm pretty confident I could get this reduced by 15% which puts it at $6,250. A difference of $2,250 from the option above but likely guaranteed to resolve the problem. This would come with a 2 year unlimited mile warranty. The car is a 2008 3.0si with 96,000 miles. The issue started around 87,000 miles and has gotten much more frequent but not worse per se. The most frustrating part is that I am a VERY conservative driver and can't imagine the issue is due to excessive wear and tear as 90% of my miles are highway. The dealer has done every scheduled and recommended service as well as oil at half intervals, ie. every 7,500 miles. The water pump and plugs were recently replaced at around 90,000 miles. I have not done any previous transmission maintenance. Decisions, decisions! |
