Question How to remove ECU in E70?

Google Search is failing me. I can't find anywhere that describes how to remove the ECU from an E70 X5. Looked on other forums too. Only BMW-related doc that I've found so far says I need to go through the glove compartment.

Can anyone offer instructions or point me to a link?

Thanks

ECU ? ECU (electronic control unit) is a generic term used in the automotive industry for essentially a computer system of some sort. Theres over a hundred ecus in the x5. Which one do you want to remove?

The ECU as in what performance tuners remap. They all just talk about an ECU. What you tune and remap for additional HP & Torque.

I removed the ECU from my old 328i at one time to get it remapped. Just trying to find out how to remove it (for tuning) from an E70 X5.

I found this link

@soldmystang

Yes, you could well be right that it's not a good idea. Maybe that's why Dinan and other "common" tuners don't have performance upgrades for the E70 4.8i.

I'm curious....

There's this catch 22 thing going on...

Why do you need to pull the DME?
To tune it.
Who is tuning it? Surely with their expertise that can tell you how to remove it...

So why ARE you trying to remove it???

Was just wondering because Upsolute claims to be able to upgrade your ECU if you send it in to them.

Genuinely curious as to why you need to remove the DME???

I cannot imagine a situation in which someone has a real and qualified reason to gain access to, and physically remove the DME...yet needs a public forum to figure it out.

Oh, a perfectly acceptable answer is "Just curious, not planning on doing it now, but was wondering how it is done in the event people make DME upgrades that require removal".

And I suppose I too am glad you are not my son.
