You skipped the pre-lci 4.8 which I felt was a dog. if you liked your 4.4, you will absolutely love the 5.0. There are so many things which makes the 5.0 shine.

Really? I test drove a 50i and three 48i's and opted for the 48i as it was cheaper (within manf warranty plus CPO) instead of going for a new 50i. I didn't see much difference, honestly. Then again, it was just after rush hour in lower NYS so I couldn't get it on the "open" road. Not saying they compare, I know the 50i is faster...but the seat-o-my-pants meter wasn't THAT much more impressed.

Yeah..funny how they did that. It's a 4.4 TT but they call it a 50...implying a 5.0. Especially confusing after the previous gen where it was 3.0, 4.4, 4.6, 4.8 and those all meant something. Even my 2007 4.8 is a 4.8. Damn you, BMW!

Congrats.

History check.

318 came with 1.9 litres sometimes
320 came with 2.0 and 2.2 litres at different times
323 came with 2.5 litres
325 came with everything, from 2.5 to 2.7 to 3.0 litres, possibly more
28 has meant 2.8 litres, 3.0 litres detuned, or 2.0 litres turbocharged
35 has meant 3.5 litres, and 3.0 litres turbocharged
40 has meant 4.0 litres, 4.4 litres, and 3.0 litres turbocharged

It has been going on since the mid 1970s, when BMW brought out the first 3 series to replace the 2002.

50 is just the latest in a long line of 'not quite equal to displacement' as compared to actual displacement

4.8 was "natural aspiration engine", 50 is twin turbo. I drove both, 4.8 felt quicker for me, I think because of lack of turbo lag.

Turbo lag is almost completely gone in that engine since it uses two turbochargers -one for low revs another for mid and highs. 4.4 TT is way faster - more HP and much more torque.
