Now this is something really annoying. They told me it's the light, after $460 worth of labour that sent a signal to some Footwell Module, which deactivated the third light.

So basically they just reset the footwell module and asked me for more money to replace the light, which they say, is causing the short circuit. I have asked them to put the car back in its original shape and I'll pick it up.

Blue Dragan, just sent you a PM, please check.

Do you have any details on what the update to the software is? Was there a service code or something that I can have my dealer check to see if my car has this? My rear right unit burned out and I'm in need for a replacement. Thanks!

I have another set of pre-lci tail lights for sale, $200 shipped for both left and right outers, if yuor currently have burn marks, this would be good to replace them with.

Thanks Blue Dragon. I'm afraid I'm headed to the stealership to get the reprogramming done and getting a new set to make sure it's warrantied in case it burns out again. Didn't know this is a common problem; BMW should really do something about this. I'm slowly losing faith and loyalty to BMW after owning only BMW cars my whole life. Perhaps change is good.

Holy mackerel! Stealership is asking $225 (USD) to just update the software to lower the voltage going to the rear lights. Isn't this criminal?

Is there any alternative to having to take it into the dealership? I'm just flabbergasted to find out that they will sell you brand new tail lights for $350 (or $250 depending on where you go) and charge you $225 to correct their defect in the software.

Are there any alternatives to this? Does the whole tail light assembly have to be replaced? Do they have to reprogram something. Can't the bulb just be replaced? I have a 2007 and it's lasted this long.

Have you looked to see if your assembly is burnt like in the original post?

Yes, it looks exactly like that. I ordered a replacement tail light assembly figuring I have no other choice. The dealer wants $305 for the assembly and $284 to install. I will never buy another BMW for this reason alone.
