This is the second time this has happened in one week. I traded in a 2000 X5 with no problems.

I had the water in taillight issue (although mine were the lights on the tail gate that had the problem).

I was told the leak was caused by the rubber seals deteriorating. It begs the question of quality. A 3 yrs old car shouldn't be experiencing problems like this from a reputable brand.

BMW is pretty sub-par for reliability... just gotta know this going in and you'll be less frustrated. Almost.

Tailgate light also. The dealership is taking good care of me. I just wish the car was gone over very well for a CPO. How can I find things wrong in the first two hours after leaving the lot.

People for whatever reason think the CPO certification process is very thorough and "only the best of the best" get the CPO label. BMW Marketing would like to you believe that, but the reality is that the CPO inspection process varies greatly by dealer and some dealers barely look things over at all.

Add to that the fact that the E70 has a lot of things that can go wrong and greater complexity than say, the E53.

...What M said above, and that CPO 'Inspection' process is going to vary by dealer: some may actually check out a few/several items, and others will give it a 'detail' by their $8 an hour towel wiper, and park it on the lot with the CPO sticker. There are literally pages of threads on the "CPO Process", and its varied results, here on this Board.

Every car brand on the planet now has 'certified pre-owned' or some such, and any used car, regardless of 'inspection' is subject to the vagaries of previous ownership, and stuff wearing out/breaking...

I should have held on to my 2000 X5 4.4l. But at a 150,000 miles. Who knows what can go wrong. I just assumed being BMW and not just any other car. That the car would have been looked over from top to bottom. I have until sept of this year then CPO kicks in.

They told me and gave me a list of 350 points inspection that my X went through (so called), before I purchased it as CPO. The very first hour, found 51 problems from broken buttons, AC vents, malfunctioning wiper blades, cracked side signal light to name a few.

And within first three months of purchase, found over 100 other problems, that they never fixed telling me either it's normal or they can't replicate, until my CPO kicked in and they started asking for money to fix the issues as they are "not" covered under the CPO warranty as per them. Same issues that I took the vehicle for many times before, which now they claim needs to be checked, but not under warranty.

I had that problem - the dealer changed loads of kit before working out it was actually the xDrive controller box. Had to get a new one shipped form Germany.

Before it got to that we had a new positioning motor, transfer box and something else which I can't remember.

I loved doing CPO inspections. I dont do them anymore but I would always approach it as if it were my car. Oh, that trim piece is peeling? Replace. Little tire noise? Replace and align. With all the new cars (F01, F10, etc) being way more reliable than past models, Techs are looking extra hard for repairs during CPO inspections. But it all comes down to how much money does the used car manager want to put into each vehicle.
