I think the diesel and the gas versions have different releases (ie you can get a 2013 gas now, but the 2012 diesel is the latest model). That might be why

Aren't diesels still come with the older 6-speed transmission?

Yup. And that transmission has the manual bypass so it gets the tool.

The tool is not needed for the new transmission, as BMW is sure it will never malfunction and need a manual override...

My 2011 came with the red release for the transmission but not the wrench or the sunroof crank (which I bought). I believe that the 8 speed in the 2011s is the same unit as the 2012s and 2013s.

I haven't looked under the cup holder insert for the release but will. Strange that they would have in a 2011 and not later model years if the trans is the same.
