Surreal day

I go into the dealer for an inspection last Friday. Pick up updated NAV DVDs for my 2008 X5. Get intermittent Disk Read Errors over the weekend. Go back to the dealer today and they tried to convince me to pay over $1k for a new NAV DVD Drive that can read all the amount of data on the new disks. Needless to say, I'm pretty fine with my 2008 DVD with no errors and can find updated restaurants and whatnot on my cell phone.

Yeah I would be fine using my phone too at that price.

Anything electronics based has been quoted to me at over $1k to replace. Had one error code about something with the radio. Part is over $500 and then they want to charge over $500 for labor for "coding" the X5. Pure insanity.

It would be cheaper to drop the transmission out of this car as it would only cost me $150 since that's all that CPO seems to cover.

Car NAV updates...like paying to walk down the street, imo.

The 'service provider/map source' wants $300 for 'updated maps' on my CEO's 2010 Hyundai Tuck, ... ... this coming from an oe NAV software company that can't find its azz with both hands.

I am surprised the car companies can continue to sell NAV, esp at the absurd prices/bundled 'package' option requirement, when my CEO's 3 yr old Droid smartphone does a better job of actually navigating with real time traffic info, and can find places the in dash NAV has never 'known'.

1. It isn't "all that new data" that is the problem, otherwise BMW would have a TSB out on it...

2. It COULD be a defective media. How did they rule out the DVD?

3. It COULD be that the laser head needs cleaning...used to affect the older MKx series...of course BMW dealers only replace $1000 units, no cleaning of optics.

Happened with two sets of DVDs, works fine with my original DVD. I was thinking about cleaning the head, but just decided to return the media so that they wouldn't give me hassle about returning it. I also started reading up about the Disk Read Error and since everything works with my original disk, I decided to leave it be so that I didn't break it.
