Had to do a ton of research on this trying to figure out what exhaust was supposed to come on my 35i with ZMX.

Which model do you have, 50i or 35i? They're both clamp on, so if you're current exhaust has them welded, it's a cut and clamp.

I had mine adjusted at the dealer today to get them sitting even, BMW didn't make the performance exhaust for the 35i an easy install, have to adjust the exhaust and the tips to make sure everything lines up but they got it right after a few tries.

This is what mine look like:

Apparently (according to my BMW dealer) the single pipe won't fit on my X5, is this correct? Or is the dealer just being a typical dealer.

If your existing pipes are welded, then you'll have to cut them off for these to clamp on, so that may be why they're telling you they won't fit. I know the stock 35i m sport ones were welded, but when you install the performance exhaust they aren't.

Mine are not welded. I had the ac schnitzer tips, but removed them as they looks good from the rear, but crap from the sides (sticked out too much) Now I have the standard ones on (had to buy new ones, very $$$ for that crap looking tip). I also think that my exhaust is aftermarket, as its stainless steel and have a louder growl than a 4.8, but has the standard clamp for the tips.

Now I have a 40d with the nicer (IMO) exhausts than the 5.0 ones. The are too small for the hole. I'm probably going to get a full AC Schnitzer exhaust system which comes with the nicest looking exhaust tips I have even seen.

I don't have the m sport pack, I got the performance aerodynamic bodykit instead And as for diesel vs petrol, in the UK my 40d cost me more than a full spec X5 M in the states. And I'm not complaining about 380hp+ and 0-60 in 5.2 (remap)
