I knew what I wanted (I had flexibility within couple of options), I knew how much I was going to spend (preapproved from a credit union for a specific amount), I knew how much these cars went for with a specific mileage range and the age. After a while found a car at a local dealership, priced over my preapproved amount... long story short - I did my haggling over the email and the text messaging - this way I had something in writing (I understand, it was non-binding, but in writing nonetheless)...

As a matter of fact, I am looking for something again, and I get a bunch of emails "offering" my exact part, but I have to call them - I am not calling unless they email me... That is the old calling trick, and then you get to the dealership :

about 10 years ago my father-in-law wanted a spanking brand new Kia Sedona, specific color, certain options... I tried to talk him out of it, but the man said, that at least once in his life he wanted to own a brand new car... after searching for his specs, one dealer in DE says, he has it...

We drove 2 hours to get there to see the car, just to find out that the car had no sunroof... Oh, but they can install it... Hell no, you lied to us, you told us that the car had option A, B, C, etc., when indeed it was missing option B...

we don't do business with liers, even if you get the car of his dreams the next day and call us back (yeah, I know, Kia!!!)

I agree with the OP, it is not the matter of having the car or not, or bringing the customer in to the showroom or not, or looking for a unicorn - it is the mere fact of LYING right to the man's face that gets person going... could be a car, or could be a furnace repair people...
