For Your Enjoyment...What Do You Think???

I received an email from the local BMW dealership regarding the BMW Extended Warranty and the BMW Maintenance Upgrade Program. I called and inquired about both items and the cost associated with each.

BMW Maintenance Upgrade Program – Starts from the in-service date.
6 years or 100K miles = $2295

BMW Extended Warranty (comprehensive coverage) – Starts from when you purchase the warranty, not the in-service date.

3 years or 75K miles = $4299
4 years or 75K miles = $4999
5 years or 100K miles = Representative didn’t say.
6 years or 100K miles = $9399 (WOW)

I have a CPO warranty with 2 years left or when my 5 reaches 100K miles (which will not happen in 2 years). However, I did ask the Representative what the difference was between the CPO Extended Warranty and the Extended Warranty (they should be the same). He didn’t know J I thought that was amusing!

Take care,
Donald

I was quoted right around $5000 for a 7 year/100K Platinum plan a few months ago. If anyone is interested, send Patrick Casey an e-mail.

Good luck!

That Extended Maintenance portion is simply a guess/bet on your part that your X will need brakes and maybe an oil change or two, in the two years you would have left on that deal: from in-service date. The question none of us can really answer is if that ~$2400 inc tax, is a 'good deal'/good bet on your part.

When you last had your brakes/rotors done might figure into your equation...

As for ext warranty, I used to understand their deals; I no longer do...the first tier you wrote is seemingly academic in terms of being unusable currently, as it would seem you will quickly eclipse that 75k mile mark, after buying that tier. Or, is that an additional 3 years and an additional 75k miles on top of what you have? Very confusing, in terms of what the genius sales guy wrote...

But, you didn't mention your actual current mileage and 'time', so I am guessing.

The next tier(s) are pricey, and simply an actuarial bet, (by them), that you won't 'use' that much in covered repairs, eg trans, et al.

OP- Interesting they say these are "BMW" warranties, yet run from the purchase date and not inservice. I am not aware of any BMW warranties like that....

Those surely are stupid prices though.... OTOH, you could I guess buy the 6/100 at 4/50 and be covered to 10 years (minus one day) and 149999 miles..

I currently have 44,152 miles on my 2008 X5. I recently had it serviced in June and had the oil changed, all fluids flushed (except transmission), new brake pads and rotors (both front and rear), etc., etc. So...I am good shape.

However, I thought that I would "entertain" the BMW sales person regarding the Maintenance Program Upgrade and Extended Warranty.

I actually called and spoke with a BMW Service Advisor regarding the BMW Maintenance Upgrade Program. He mentioned that due to the fact that I recently had my 5 serviced that I should not purchase the Maintenance Program Upgrade.

Regarding the CPO warranty vs. the Extended warranty..
.
They are both the same. Neither is a bumper-to-bumper warranty and do not cover everything like a new car BMW 4 year / 50K mile warranty.

Most of us know/are aware of the CPO limited situ, and that it is substantially less than the orig new car warranty.

I bought an Extended 3 Year Warranty for my last X5 as I sold it to my next door neighbour, cost $4,250 AUD, which is compairable to your US pricing.
