He measured the tire tread at 5/32 and recorded some numbers from the tires and told me he was going to call Michelin to get those two tires replaced. But after 3 minutes call from Michelin, I was offered to replace the full set of 4 tires by Michelin at 50% of cost. I took it immediately considering only 3/32 tread life left on those tires ![]() Here is the breakdown of cost, of course, I won't take the bite of $164 free replacement certificates. Tires will be ready in 3 business days, it's good timing to get new tires for winter.

![]() I like the road hazard plans, especially if you'll get 40k out of the tires. BMW sells their plan for 1300-1800, here you are getting it for much less. All you need is ONE 'non-repairable' flat on any of the 4 tires over the next n years and you are ahead.... GL A |

I just read the terms, the certificate covers original tread down to 3/32 or 3 yrs from the purchase. Based on our experience on those tires, the tires probably can last up to 30k or 1.5 yrs for us. I didn't get a single flat in the past 10 yrs, that's why I thought to skip it in the first place. I may reconsider that since these tires are RFT and non-repairable.

RFT are not non-repairable. An individual puncture may be non-repairable, based on the location of the hole (how close it is to the sidewall) and how long it was driven on underinflated (due to heat damage).

I see, I will get more details about how warranty terms play on RFT.

Haha. Ok. I stand corrected. At least according to this tire guy. No way to be sure what started the chunking though

It's the same as if you were to get two fronts free and buy your own rears. I would have told them to give me two fronts free because they're defective and perhaps give a discount on the two new rears, otherwise I'd be going elsewhere for my RFTs.
Then again, that's me. |

The tire manufacturer warranty prorates the cost of the new tire based on the percentage of remaining tread on the old tire and the price of the replacement tire. So for 5/32 tread life of the tire(10/32 new, 2/32 bold), 50% of cost is quite decent for me, especially it not only applied to defected tires. Here is the info regarding Michelin warranty: Workmanship/Materials If a tire is covered, and 2/32nds of an inch (1.6mm) or less of the original tread is worn (or 25% or less, whichever is more beneficial to you), and it is within 12 months of the date of purchase, we will, free of charge, replace your tire with a comparable new MICHELIN ® replacement tire, mount the tire, and balance the tire. You must pay the cost of any other service charges and applicable taxes, including PAX Gel/Gel 3 packs. If a tire is covered, and more than 2/32nds of an inch of original tread has been worn (or more than 25%, whichever is more beneficial to you), or it has been more than 12 months from the date of purchase, we will replace the tire with a comparable new MICHELIN replacement tire on a pro rata basis. This means that you will be responsible for paying a portion of the PAX Gel/Gel 3 packs.cost. The Michelin tire retailer will determine the portion that you will be responsible for by multiplying the percentage of the original usable tread worn, by the current selling price at the adjustment location or the price in the current Michelin Base Price List, whichever is lower. You also will be responsible for paying in-full the cost of mounting and balancing the tire, and the cost of any other service charges and applicable taxes, including
