99.9999% certain the answer is NO. (Unless the work instruction mandates it... probably change parts, bleed, top off fluid)

I took my wife's 07 X5 4.8 in for this recall and had them do the brakes while they were at it. Upon leaving the dealership (car has 35k on it) I noticed her tail lights flickering and she called me and told me that the ABS, Shifter, Brake, Camera, Transmission, etc. alarms were all going off then it died while traveling at 55 mph. I unhooked the negative battery cable to try and reset it, but when i got in it gave me a shifter error message, service message and would seem to engage some relay but not start when I pushed the button. Then the alarm just started going off.

I called the dealer and told them to come get it and they immediately told me that it wasn't necessarily their fault. These crazy cars!!

Almost forgot, right before it died you could floor it and it would just stutter and stumble with no increase in RPM's. Dealer says it's a coincidence.

This sounds like a ground wire was disconnected to the chassis and not reconnected or reconnected but not tightened.

Thanks,
That actually sounds quite plausible. The reason I posted it on this thread is because I had the brake recall done then had these problems. Also, it drove perfect for 5 miles and just before it went totally haywire the brake alarm came up along with the service or picture of the lift then the ABS, Transmission, etc. Best SUV we've ever owned, but as my wife puts it, "Owning that car is exhausting."

When I disconnected the negative battery cable I guess I didn't notice if it was loose from the chassis, but I do know I tightened the heck out of it when I put it back on. The last thing it did was display something about the shifter being bad, but it was o.k. to drive home, but it would not turnover and then even more alarms lit up on the dash then the alarm went off and wouldn't shut off. It's either something very minor like the battery cable or something very big. I'll have to ask them tomorrow if they disconnected the battery cable from the chassis for any reason while doing to brakes. It waited at the dealer for the proper pad wear sensors, perhaps those are kaput.

Brake recall

Just had mine done a couple of weeks ago. Basically they go in and look for oil and go from there. Mine was ok so button it up and done. They did say that if oil is present then master cylinder replacement likely. Pretty much have to fluid at that point.

Took mine in yesterday morning for it. I got the dreaded call in the afternoon about the nationwide backorder on the part--he said the earliest they would get the part would be Thursday. And he said it takes about 3 days for it be completed (apparently, they have to lift the engine out to do it). So, I'm guessing it won't be ready until next week sometime. My loaner is an '13 328--though they said I can check back at end of each day to swap out for something bigger like a 5, X5, etc (or maybe a 7 Series--I got one of those for like 2 weeks as they didn't have anything else--had it for like a week).
