You're better off with the square set up for winter. I have 19s - 255 all around. You're going to get a lot of responses that say you're fine with the staggered set and good snow tires but in my opinion, the rears are sleds. Your choice - looks or safety. I'd rather have smaller rears than have someone say how mean my wheels look while I'm wrapped around a pole.

To your point, I don't think I would call the look hideous, but spacers will likely be in order for me this winter. I added the fender flares to our 35d in March while still running 255/18 Blizzaks. You can see the fender gap from the flare to the outside of the tire. It's not great, but it's winter and not a lot of detailing. I have 223 M 19" wheels for summer so you can see the difference. I'll probably get 20mm spacers for the rear this fall before the Blizzaks go back on.
