^^ I'm 100% sure, it wasn't water that came out before I clamped it off.

Then I would ask what is oil doing your cooling system? Did you remove the bottom or the top hose?

Again, not being a dick at all but you're 100% sure you got oil out of it and I'm 100% that's water cooling...

I removed the bottom hose, there is no oil in my cooling system. All the instructions that I have found specifically refer to this as an oil cooler on the 35D.

Here are some more instructions

http://workshop-manuals.com/bmw/x_se..._headlight%29/

Notice under preliminary tasks

"Release engine oil cooler"

Could you share those instructions? I shared with you a BMW document that clearly say that is connected to the radiator where the coolant is...

And if that is an oil cooler than is an oil cooler of what oil? Not engine or transmission, or power steering so I'm unsure what other oils are there

^^ I couldn't read your BMW doc from google docs, something about the permissions. I'm telling you exactly what was there on my car.

Just had a look at it. I don't know what to say. The two sources I quoted above are what I used for my LCI headlight install, and were exactly what I encounted. (oil in the cooler lines). The instructions even say

Quote:
Detach oil line (1) from engine oil cooler flange. Catch and dispose of emerging fluid. Unlock and disconnect holder (2). Remove engine oil cooler (3).Note: After completing work, check engine oil level and top up if necessary.

Well they do, but that part clearly doesn't apply to it.

Where did you find that other quote about detaching flanges from oil cooler lines?

Because citing your source here it's clear that there's no engine oil cooler, but a oil/water heat exchanger: BMW Workshop Manuals > X Series E70 X5 3.0d (M57T2) OFFRD > 2 Repair Instructions > 11 Engine (M57T2) > 44 Oil Cooler > 1 RA Removing And Installing, Sealing Or Replacing Oil _ Water Heat Exchanger (M57T2)
