BMW X5 E70 3.0d Hard Start

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum so let me introduce myself. I am from South Africa and have a BMW X5 E70 3.0d & have covered 10000km (6000 miles) in her. It is a 2007 model with 111000 km (69000 miles).

I Went to my local dealer to get a service message (statutory vehicle inspection) cleared. While there the car would not start easily - seems to be a hard start. When it does eventually start it soon cuts out. SA said it can be driven but must keep the revs up. He ran a diagnostic and it picked up a problem with no. 6 injector. He also said problem with glow plugs 1,2, 3 & 5 . I'm not particularly worried about the glow plugs as the climate is very warm here and even winters are mild. As the car kept cutting out I was forced to leave the vehicle there. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? What are my best options? I believe the injectors are made by Bosch so was wondering if it would not be better to take it to them instead. Dealer would charge me R750 for diagnostic if I take it elsewhere. The problem first surfaced on Sunday morning after I fuelled up diesel at Shell Durban North - by the Pick n Pay. It done it once and then started fine. Today it is dong it much more frequently. Could it possibly be fuel contamination? Drove to the dealership without any problem. Problem seems to persist when the engine is warm and does not happen on a cold engine . SA says perhaps a problem with the injector not getting fuel at enough pressure. I have an aftermarket warranty and hope it covers the cost of the repair but somehow doubt it will cover the entire repair as the dealers inflate their prices.

Took a video with my phone to highlight the problem- please excuse the quality

Injector #6 fails due to rain water that trickles down along the filter box bolts. This is usually due to those plastic partitions at the back of the engine bay - they aren't 100% watertight and often break due to heat & vibration. BMW now supplies an updated middle one with longer flaps.

Thank you for the response Price. Any idea why it would only show symptoms when the engine is warm? Would this problem with the rain water cause contamination of the fuel? Excuse my ignorance - I am a novice.

Many thanks for the reply Price - you seem to be an expert. I take it the water gets onto the electrical bits of the injector & wiring & damages it that way. Do you know the part number for the injector & the plastic partition that leeks water. Would the wiring have to be replaced as well. Mine is a 2007 X5 so it would have the earlier design. As a precaution I would like to replace this part as well.

You can look up part #s on www.realoem.com.

If your partitions - there are 3 pieces - are intact, you can only replace the middle one as it's the only part that has been updated by BMW.
Keep in mind that new injector will have to be coded in.

When you refer to the centre piece of the partition are you talking about part number 15 or 14? I did notice one of the partition parts are loose - I think it's 14.

Many thanks for the assistance with this issue - it's been wrecking my brain since it happened. It's somewhat of a relief to get some friendly advice from a forum member.

Problem sorted. Injector 6 replaced as well as all the glow plugs. No faults showing. Replaced central partitioning as this was split in two. Hopefully no more issues.
