Part Location Help (Code P2402) FOUND & FIXED

Does anyone know where this part is on a 2007 4.8 X5?

"Leak diagnosis pump" Part of the fuel ventilation system

RealOEM.com * BMW E70 X5 4.8i Activated Charcoal Filter/FUEL VENTILAT

I want to DIY but have no idea where on the vehicle it is located.

Is your plan to buy a "leak diagnosis pump" and replace it???? To get rid of that code?

If I were faced with that code I would google the code, with "BMW" and read all I could...THEN I would come to understand that there are several things that can cause the DME to think it has a bad pump. ONE is a bad pump. Others are bad gas tank caps, and DTML solenoids...could be others.

Codes are not 'replace this part' instructions.... it just tells you were to start the diagnostics.

IMO

I have done a TON of reading on this from every Bimmer forum to the actual BMW service/repair manuals and the "common" cause is the pump itself.

My plan was to remove the pump and get power to it as a minimum to see if it's running.

I have already replaced the gas cap since it was cheap and easy.

Finally, I don't have the troubleshooting expertise but replacing a $70 pump as a shot at fixing it is a hell of a lot better than paying a mechanic at either the dealer or an Indy over $100 an hour in labor. I trust auto mechanics about as much as I trust....well...noone. I dont trust them. I've seen them bill people over and over again several hours on BS like front brake pad changes.

So long story short, I agree with you that I do my homework, make an educated guess and then start with the most probable and least expensive replacement options.

Sounds like a plan. Good luck, and update this thread if you fix it!

UPDATE:
Replaced the Leak Diagnostic Pump (DTML) with an $80 Bosch pump I bought from EBay. Reset the code with the AWESOME BMWhat OBD app and problem solved!

Very easy DIY. On the E70 4.8 it's above the right rear wheel. Just remove the wheel, wheel well body trim and wheel well cover and it will very obvious. You'll have to remove the 2 10mm nuts to lower the entire charcoal canister to get at the pump for removal.

Very easy.

Thanks for reporting back OP, that way someone else can find it when they search and see the resolution of the problem

Hi -

I just received the same P2402 code on my 2008 X5 3.0si and found this thread. I know this thread is a couple of years old now but I wanted to know if the issue ever came back after this fix. I am planning to do the same fix on my car. Hopefully - it's in the same location on my car as it is on the 4.8si.
