Great DIY...replacing my links tonight if my package arrives. Picked up Meyle links from Turnermotorsport for $95 shipped...also, the correct torque setting for the nuts is 41 ft lbs in case anyone wanted to know but hand tight will do
Thanks Gregg3gs!

I will edit the write up and add the torque info to it.

Thanks for this write-up. I was poking around my X tonight and checking things out and saw that my top joints on both sides need replacing sometime. My question is, can this wait another 7 months or so until I have time to do it and it's not freezing as hell outside? Mine are nowhere near the condition of the ones posted and have 98k kms on them.

I have a question? Last time I looked at mine, they looked ok. I do have a strange sound when I go over bump of metal tapping. Is this an indicator?
Thanks! |

That was my experience. After replacing the links the front end got a lot quieter. I will have to do control arms most likely soon too, so investigating your situation farther may be something you need to do. It does seem that most components in front end start to go out about a 100k. |

I did mine today, they weren't bad, but I could hear the clunk beginning on the bumps. X5 has 107k km

My 'creaking', 'clunking' noise has gotten worse in the past year. I'm glad I found this post. For piece of mind, I paid Pep Boys $20 to lift it up and give their 2 cents on the issue. They've done other routine work for me at a decent price (blake fluid, oil, tire change, etc.) and their hours of operation (7 days) work better than some indy mechanics.
They found that the front left sway bar link needs replaced, but they also said my control arm ball joint has some play that is causing the noise I'm hearing. Their price quote: Control Arm: $137 Labor for Control Arm: $156 Sway Bar Link: $135 Labor for Sway Bar: $94 Alignment: $90 I'm going to start with ordering the sway bar links for $50 from any number of parts suppliers that i've found (I believe this to be part number 31356859651, right?). This looks like a fairly easy DIY. If there is still noise, then maybe the control arm ball joint is also causing an issue and I'll revisit this. Is there a good DIY on that replacement? And is an alignment necessary after doing that? Also, can someone elaborate if the star socket I need is female T-40 (as pictured in this DIY)? When I search T-40 star socket, I'm only seeing male. Anyone have a link to the right one to use? I have an E-18 socket I used for other previous work, but that's too big. It also appears I need a second wrench for this job (I only have one). |

I just did my lower control arms yesterday (or tension struts), its a DIY. You need a 27mm 12 point wrench, a torque wrench, and two 18 mm wrenches, but a set of allen keys to hold the ball joint from turning. Took me about 2 hours to complete the job (jack the front end up, put in jack stands and take the wheels off. Then partially remove the lower splash shield to expose the nut and bolt on the inside of the arms, and then remove, replace and torque
