Angry Woes of my first X5

Hello everyone this is kind of my formal hello. I have been mainly on the bimmerforums because I have had 4 E38's but roughly a week ago I bought a 2007 X5 3.0iS with 98,000 mls. The vehicle looks almost new (I will post pictures later). BUT NOW as of last Friday it has had nothing but issues. It started with a check engine light for emissions. I might have left the fuel cap unfastened but I am not sure I have cleared the code and it has not come back on. I have confirmed that the cooling fan has stopped working, the transmission is no longer shifting properly but I think this may be happening as the fluid is getting to warm because of the cooling fan not working. during that time the dynamic lights stopped working and my DTC/4x4 stopped working. So far I have loved the vehicle and don't blame BMW but rather the dealership as they sold me a unsafe piece of junk that overheated and turned off in the middle of an intersection nearly killing me!! I can see signs that someone tested the fan before I got the car. They forgot to mention they replaced the valve cover gaskets which are now leaking. They did not notify me of such issues before purchase even though they said they did a pre-purchase inspection and they car was in great mechanical condition they said.

ok sorry!!!! huge rant over!

Sorry to hear for all your troubles. Most used car dealerships will mask or fixed the problems temporarily, but car with a not working cooling fan is a bit too much.
My advice, there is a huge probability that all the problems(except the fan) are related to one thing.Just have the car scanned by an independent shop with a BMW scan tool like DIS or ISTA.Or buy that BMWHAT,I hear it is very good.
I have a used fan for sale with 40k miles,I will give you a friendly price if you are interested.
But after all, after 4 E38's the X5 couldnt be that bad

Hah yeah beings that 3 of them had their viscous fans explode! I had a working INPA setup but it doesn't support this new of a model so I ordered a new cable.

The X5 is going to the local dealership today for diagnosis.

They offered me some kind of warranty for $3000 due at time of payment of the vehicle so I declined as I payed for the car in cash so I didn't feel like adding another $3k. I am very surprised about the fan as well! someone at some point definitely tested the fan with a multimeter because there is a puncture to the positive line to it. Hopefully they'll take care of it otherwise after all the 7's I am very comfortable working on the car but unfortunately my wallet won't be!!

So the dealership looked at the car and said the relay for the fan is bad. First $480 relay Iv'e ever heard of!! But they are splitting the bill with me also they are footing the labor. I am very happy as I bot the car used with no warranty so it turned out better that expected!

There is no relay for the electric fan.The control unit is inside the motor and the ECU sends 0-5V signal directly to the control unit. This control unit for the fan is known to go bad and fan stops working, very rare runs on 100% all the time. The complete fans are usually found used for a $300-400 range, replacement involves 4 bolts, few clips and a few minutes.
You can ask the dealer for the part # or a picture of the said relay.

You bought a 100k mile 7 year old car from a dealer whom you think is telling you the truth?!?!??

I constantly wonder how people can get to a position in life to afford a $xx,000 car yet dont understand that used car dealers are just liars.

They dont do a real PPI. They just patch up the car and hope it doesnt die for a few months until you go away. Now, like some abuse victim, they sold you a lemon and for $240 you are thankful they agreed to help fix it.

In the future, GET A INSPECTION by "not the seller" and by "a good, qualified mechanic". Who knows what else they might have found had you had a real inspection done. Transmission good? Fluid changed?

Sigh

Well ard I own a dealership and my father owns a mechanics shop so truthfully I wouldn't have cared if thy split the bill one way or the other I can fix it myself. I had them do a written "inspection" as a proof of record THAT's ALL. Everything on this car is good I personally did the inspection on MY rack as I have bought and sold many BMWs over the years and know what to look for, this was just the first E70. Everything was fine at the time the fan died once that happened the tranny stopped shifting properly because the tranny cooler was not getting sufficient air flow at low speeds.
