Carly for BMW works pretty much on all models, HOWEVER, what subsystems are currently supported and what features can be modified varies model to model.

Part of the issue is the feature set that each model may have differs between newer and older models.

It also appear for the older models features or models are not all covered and sometimes are added at Carly is updated.

Carly is a VERY broad tool covering a WIDE range of models. BMW has also included SO many newer models, the Carly staff probably cannot keep up very easily.

So unlike BMW Scanner 1.4.0 which was written for a specific group of models/chassis around a 8-10 year build window, Carly is covering a much wider range of years and models.

For instance on my E46 I recall only the LCM, GM5 and Power Seat Modules were supported. But things like the triple turn signal lane change turn signal flash was supported because I have a 7/06 build date on my E46, 1 month before the coupes and convertibles were stopped and my E46 had a much newer LCM that earlier E46 which did not offer the triple turn signal lane change option.

So some features may also be module/year dependent as well.

Is Carly the end all tool for your E53, no, but it is a growing and useful tool that does not require a computer or to learn long German language strings and syntax to code certain available features on the vehicle.

I suggest considering Carly as an add on to any standard OBDII Apps or other BMW specific software you may already have. You are likely to upgrade to a newer model BMW at some point, probably have friends or family members that have newer models and Carly will in fact pay for itself if you use it a few times.

Carly is also a work in progress, so hopefully they will circle back around and be adding more functionality to the early models over time. A year ago, I would not have given Carly much thought, but since I also now have an E70 and Carly has matured and been expanded, I have used Carly do code/program many things on my E70 as well as some basic features on my E46 and friends E46's.
