X5D transmission filter DIY question

Went to the Indy(Beamer Auto in Clinton, MD) today for the transmission fluid drain/fill and pan change, mechatronic sleeve, transfer case fluid with reset.

Nice clean facility and professional service. They are a BMW & Mercedes shop but they only had about 15 BMWs sitting outside. A good sign they know these cars. They have a waiting area next door with free wifi, TV with roku. They also have two monitors extra on the wall to show customers parts and diagnostics I think. Aaron the shop manager was informative and he explained to me how they lower the crossmember and support the tranny. That there looks like something only a facility like this with the necessary equipment can do. They are all former dealer service specialists and they have their various training certificates hanging on the waiting area wall. I would have wanted to see the crossmember lowered myself but since I had to go with my 2 year old I didn't even ask because he's a handful and they might not want to entertain a hyper kid around shop equipment.

I asked for the old parts back in the box(I took my parts and fluid to them). Looks like the tech filled it with about 6.5 liters of Zf lifeguard 6. They gave it a test ride to double check for leaks. Tranny just as smooth as before but with a little more newer fluid in it so I'm satisfied.

Labor time for entire service items- 3hours
Total Labor cost-$400

Hi SmartSolution, could you explain what is "transfer case fluid with reset"?
What reset is it?

I had to lower the crossmember a couple inches to allow the bolts to clear. 6 bolts if I recall correctly.
Might as well change the transfer case fluid as you will have access to its drain and fill plugs.

I think it can be reset with a laptop running available BMW software...not a "only BMW has it" computer.

Not sure if it is necessary- i dont think I would do it unless shifting behavior changes...and if you are changing fluid properly, there should be little change.

(Just thought of this- would you run motor oil until the car was 'making noises and running sluggishly'- and then happily report "Changed the oil and it runs better now")

That's for E53. E70 is different, even if they both have 'xdrive' in the name.

I see. So basically no reset needed for E70 even though it calls for it?

Makes sense...and I've read some say they have many miles after the change with no issues.
