Considering purchase of '11 X5, 37K miles, engine replaced!

Looking for some advice....

Local dealer (not a bmw dealer) has an '11 model X5 35i with only 37K miles. Really nice looking car and I've negotiated it down to a fair price - not cheap by any means, but fair.

The thing that gives me pause is that looking at the carfax, the engine was replaced a couple thousand miles ago by the BMW dealer. It's out of warranty since the 4 years have expired, and its not CPO either. So I'd be buying an '11 model with low miles and almost no miles on the engine.

I'm not sure if that's a good thing...or perhaps a warning sign of a problem plagued vehicle! Never heard of an engine needing replacement at such a low mileage.

Any advice on what y'all would do? Would you be more likely to purchase a low mile X5 with a new engine from the bmw dealer....or less likely?

Well,
could it possibly be that the replaced engine died the VANOS Death?
Weren't the 2011s affected by that recall?

For me personally it would be a turnoff not having any kind of warranty, even though the new engine should come with one... You might want to check that.

Not sure why the engine died but VANOS is a good guess. At first the salesman thought the engine did come with a warranty since it had been done by BMW. But on further checking then he said it didn't. So perhaps if I call my local BMW Dealer and give them the vin number they could tell me.

Even if just the engine alone was covered, I'd feel a lot better.

Anyone have a guess on how much the BMW gold warranty would cost me? Would I have to buy that from my closest BMW Dealer, or could I get it from any BMW dealer nationwide that has the best price?

Go to a dealer with the vin, all BMW repairs are covered by 2 years parts /labor and unlimited mileage . Also price should be in the low very low 20's to even consider one with this history .

There is some additional checking that I would do.

First, I would try and find out why the engine was replaced. Was it caused by abuse? If abuse or neglect then consider what else might be getting ready to break because of it.

Second, if the replacement was really performed by BMW then there should be warranty. If there is no warranty, then why not. If not performed by BMW, then why not. Not that an independent couldn't do the job but I would want to know these details.

As an extension of the second point, if not performed by BMW then was it really a NEW engine? Someone could have just got it running and then traded it in. You don't want to buy a problem.

Who knows, you might end up with a steal but I don't think I would pay anywhere near retail, especially if my questions weren't answered satisfactorily and perfectly.

Roger that. It's being sold by a Porsche dealer, the carfax shows that BMW Dealer did the replacement of engine. Before I buy it, I'm taking it to another BMW dealer for a pre purchase inspection. If they give it their blessing then I might go forward with it.

'11 model X5's are typically running in the low 30's to mid 30's around here for decent ones. High mile ones can go in the mid to upper 20's. So for the very low miles it's priced decent, not exactly cheap.

I'm hoping the BMW dealer can give me some additional insight on what the lowdown on the service history is.

There is no way I'd consider that car without a warranty.

In writing, from BMW. Not "the salesman said"...

You can get all the history in the worlds... the question really isnt WHY the engine was replaced- it is 'what it the risk I get screwed with a brand new, unproven new motor'.

Sounds like you are going to assume that absence of bad news = good news. Massive mistake, IMO

Upper 20s, maybe worth the risk... but only if you can afford it, if you guessed wrong.

Don't trust CarFax!

Don't buy without a warranty ...

Don't fall in love (with a car) ...

Keep looking. Lots of deals and options out there in your price range, but you MUST be patient!

Echoing what BASORA said in the previous reply; Walk away, if for no other reason than the vehicle doesn't have a warranty. Rule of thumb with a car that costs this kind of money, generally part of that high purchase price is justified by the fact that you're buying "piece of mind". No warranty, no dice. There are hundreds of similar (if not better) deals around...

The engine in my 2008 e92 M3 was replaced by BMW due to rod bearing failure at 40k miles. I drove and tracked it another 50k miles without any issue other than it seemed to burn a lot more oil than the original engine (I had to add a quart every 3 months or so).
