One thing I have learned over the years, do not toss old/broken parts that are not basic things like filters, spark plugs and so forth.
There is always a need to keep some of the old parts for future reasons.

I had a long standing project (I have been busy last year and a half, too many things going on) to retrofit a power spindle for the trunk lid for E53.
I got the electronic control part figured out in theory, need to build a prototype, and need to dissect a power strut... I have two power struts that were damaged in an accident, and they seem to fit the bill, but I do not have tools to fix them enough to test drive them in real install... Was hoping to find a old pair (hopefully working pair), to further test the concept...

I have a 2013 BMW X5 and the tailgate unlocks and moves up ~1" and then comes back down. It does not lock. I'm thinking one of the lift motors/spindles has quit causing the system to bind and go into a blocked mode.
Any ideas? mdavidthomas |

Get home today and try the lift gate with the external gate button and now the dang thing is working. Last two mornings it has been pretty cold for NC (22F) but not sure that's had anything to do with the problem. I'll try again in the morning when it is cold.

Desperate need of help
Hi- ive been readimg this thread. I realize there arew numerous threads about this issue, but in reading this, i am somewhat overwhelmed. Heres my issue- 09x5, tailgate wont completely unlatch. I can crawl into cargo area and pull the manual release, and the hatch completely raises on its own from here- it just seems to have an issue with not unlatching completely. I did some homework on this, and i was led to the lower tailgate mechanism. I disassembled the actuator in the lower tailgate, and applied some grease to moving parts, as it had only a trace amount of lube on these moving parts. This worked well for a week. Today when my wife tried to opem the tailgate so she could put some items in, and the same symptoms presented.. At this point, could someone please point me into a direction on where to look and start? Is there a relay to check? Fuses are fine. What else can i check?
Thanks to all! (And, im sorry to post this on this existing thread..) |

Hello everyone! I was reading through this thread and looks like there is a big chunk of good info here so instead of starting a new thread i thought ill just post my issue here.
My x5 has the trunk open but will not close with the button on the trunk issue. It will move up about an inch and then down an inch when i press the close button but there it stops. Pulled and put back the 5A fuse for the close button and it seems to reset it and the trunk will close with the button once but as soon as the upper trunk actuator locks on to the lower trunk,it goes back to the no close issue. Every time i do this fuse pull and put back,it resets and will close once. I am thinking either the hall sensors in the lock actuator on the upper tailgate are giving bad signal or no signal to the hkl or the hkl module is shot. Also noticed that no matter what opening height i set the trunk to,it will open all the way to the max every time. I would really appreciate any input you guys might have! Unfortunately cannot see the pictures TerminatorX5 uploaded anymore, probably due to this thread being old. Last edited by BMWdiy; 03-09-2017 at 04:04 AM. |

Quote:
An independent scanned the vehicle (it was in for something else) identified the failed part gave me a quote of about $900 to replace both even though only one side was bad. I ended up replacing only the failed side (part was $325 at the time). It was very easy and straightforward. Everything has been working fine since. Unless you want to take a shot at replacing one side at a time or both at once you may need to get it scanned. Without the scan I would have had no way of isolating which side had failed. Thanks for your quick response! I am currently waiting for the usb scan cables to arrive and will scan the car with inpa. I know my issue is somewhat different from the one you had and dealer told me that i need one or both power lifts replaced...i just refuse to believe it. It doesnt make sense to me. I can close the tailgate with the button once and opens every time. Functions like it should until the upper tailgate lock locks onto something. Then no more closing with any button.
Another thing i noticed is that i dont get a trunk open light on the dash...Ever... Maybe the car thinks that the trunk is closed? Can it be that it is why he trunk tries to go up when i press the close button? Mistery to me still butt hopefully not for too long. I will get to the end of it,no giving up |
