8/2011 xDrive35d FRM problems

To recap for those of you that have not been following the BMWwhat thread, while I was coding my FRM, the application appeared to lose communication with the vehicle and/or FRM. Since that time, I could not connect with the FRM so I could not revert back to the previous coding.

The following features did not function or were in reduced status:

- turn signals completely non-functional including hazard lights
- front side markers non-functional
- headlights and taillights permanently on (switch does not affect operation)
- Corona lights and DRLs non-functional
- interior instrument, HVAC, gear selector and iDrive knob lights on at full intensity
- overhead console, door switch(es), head light switch, parking brake switch and 'Auto-H' switch, CD/DVD player back lighting non-functional
- ambience lighting non-functional
- high-beam/bi-Xenon lights completely non-functional
- fog lights completely non-functional
- cornering lights non-functional
- dome lights and map lights completely non-functional
- vanity mirror lights non-functional
- Welcome and Follow Me lighting non-functional
- power windows non-functional
- no audible or visual indication of remote door lock/unlocking and/or alarm arming/disarming
- reverse lights non-functional
- Auto-H system malfunction

I took the vehicle to the dealer and they provided a report that the FRM had suffered an permanent internal fault and required replacement. All of the other modules could be read and connected to and appeared 'GREEN' but the FRM appeared 'RED'. They tried disconnecting it for a few minutes and then reattempting to connect to it to no avail. They ordered the FRM and I authorized the replacement.

Today, they replaced the FRM and were able to update ALL of the modules which took several hours. At this point the FRM appeared 'YELLOW' and according to them, all features functioned normally. They attempted to encode the module. The FRM took the encoding, in that the encoding process completed without interruption but it still appeared 'YELLOW' afterwards.

They then disconnected the battery for about at least 30 minutes. After reconnecting the battery everything was functioning as expected except the driver door window switches operate the wrong side windows. The driver side switches operate the passenger side windows and vice versa. The individual door switches on the other doors operate their respective windows normally.

They attempted the encoding process again with the same results: FRM appears 'YELLOW' and the window switches are still malfunctioning. Apparently all other features are perfectly functional.

They are keeping the X5 overnight and are going to work on it tomorrow. They did put me in a loaner car and the SA says he is going to try and get BMW to help out with the repair since I've already paid for a new module, installation and coding. I'm not counting on much if anything but it's a nice possibility. The SA said I shouldn't be out anything else unless additional parts are required.

Oh boy, this could get expensive. Any thoughts from the board?

EDIT: The coding was being accomplished with an Android phone using software and Bluetooth adapter purchased directly from iViNi. I'm assuming that the original problem occurred because battery voltage lowered to the point that the programming could not continue. I'm not sure what could be causing the current issue with the driver door switches. Maybe a bad door switch assembly.

Sorry to hear about your problems.
Just wondering if you have downloaded the cracked version of bmwhat from the internet or you bought it from the developer?I had bought genuine version from the developer for iphone and later i moved to android and i asked the developer to transfer my account to android and he said NO CAN'T...So i had to get the cracked. It says something about the legal version that it can do damage if its not legal. But i don't know how much truth in that.

Authentic and purchased from the Play store. The developers are in fact having HUGE problems with cracked versions. People get these cracked versions, use them, have problems than have the gall to complain to the developers expecting help.

You're not one of those people that I'm referring to. Your situation is unfortunate and frustrating.

I've no help to offer but have a question about the circumstances surrounding the initial failure. By any chance did your car's battery run below the required minimum voltage for com's and/or coding? Or was the vehicle running at the time which would render my question redundant? I only ask because if the battery effectively died in the middle of the coding process you would expect the module to be bricked much the same as interrupting a bios firmware update on your computer if the power goes out during the process and there isn't a battery backup.
My reason for asking is sincere and if that is what happened then it could serve as a warning to the rest of us...personally I've been foolish enough to attempt running diagnostics on my X5 once without supplementing power to the battery and it lost com's 2min into the process. I had no idea these vehicle consume that much power...since then I've always started the car before resetting service codes, running diagnostics and yes, even during coding.

That's exactly what I think happened actually. That's why I'm hesitant to blame the application and call out the developers. I don't know for sure though. Hopefully some other people report that they code the brake force display successfully. I think that would pretty much confirm our hypothesis.

I usually code with the engine off and ignition on. Unfortunately I do not know a way to look at a log of some sort to see how low battery voltage got during my last attempt.

I messed around in the FRM module the other day because I had noticed newly added features (brake force display adaptions) I did make alterations to the current settings, No problem whatsoever. I did this with the engine running as always.

Good enough for me. I'm going to get right back into coding once I get the X5 back.

I bought an ebay ELM327 wi-fi dongle and was testing the lite version for IOS and at on epoint I got a message that the data speed trasfer and/or the reliability of the connection was not sufficient for coding. So if you have a dongle that you didnt buy from Ivini that may be one reason,or part of the reason.
Looks like the new FRM somehow is getting coding for a RHD car or the window switch has some software damage too.The easiest option would be to remove a working FRM from another car and test it in yours. But the dealer should take care of the problem, hopefully without more $$$.If you can get your old FRM,I can flash these on the bench, direct connection the processor inside.

So there is "software" inside the door window switch? Could this be inhibiting the final encoding process and make the FRM appear 'YELLOW' in the module status screen or whatever it's called?

I ordered all the parts replaced returned to me. I always do.

I just returned from the dealer. The service advisor is doubtful that the door switch could be the cause. The problem is with the encoding step in the FRM replacement procedure. They are waiting for BMW to provide additional troubleshooting instructions.

I don't understand the wait. I am not one to just throw parts at a problem but when a problem like this presents itself, an uncommon one where the exact cause is not obvious, I think it is diagnostically valid to temporarily install known working parts to see if the conditions change in any way. It can be part of a robust troubleshooting "toolbox" but to be useful it requires an open mind, organizational skills and thorough record keeping. I know they have a couple of X5s in there. Just do me a favor and swap in one of the door switches. See what happens. Hell, try another FRM.
