Does CPO cover diesel glow plugs?

Does anyone have experience in getting CPO warranty for diesel engine glow plugs?I went through my CPO coverage brochure that i got from BMW Canada when i bought my 2009 X5 35D but could't find anything in it.They haven't mentioned glow plugs neither in included items nor in excluded items.

Just got error code for cylinder 3 glow plug after 90K Kms and would like to change them all.

That's odd: I forgot if you ever ended up replacing the thermostat or not? Glow plugs are not a maintenance item in diesel engines (as opposed to the similarly named spark plugs in the gasoline engine).

In any case, there's the BMW bulletin that may help you: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1e...ew?usp=sharing

PS: sorry I haven't got around looking up the vacuum. I've been waiting for the oil change to come up: it's due in 3K miles so a couple of months...

Thanks lp for providing the BMW bulletin. No i didn't get a chance to replace the thermostat. Was waiting for warm weather to do the thermostat job. May be that's what caused glow plug to fail. Will take this BMW bulletin printout to the dealer and see what they say.

No worries about vacuum check.I can wait..

You got it!! You know my story with thermostat and glow plugs so I won't repeat it...

Although I doubt BMW would replace the thermostat, getting new glow plugs shouldn't be a problem...

Yes i have already tried with the dealer to get thermostat changed under CPO warranty but no success. You know these stealerships. They just cant admit the problem. But now i wont take any chance after replacing glow plugs. Will change thermostat as soon as possible.

I compared my error code with the error codes shown in the SIB but unfortunately mine are different. In SIB codes are related with the glow plug controller but on mine its 4A4E which is simply cylinder 3 open circuit.Which means they wont relate my problem with the SIB.But still i am gonna try first with the dealer before ordering glow plugs.I have allready checked with one dealership and answer was "glow plugs are not covered".Will check with different dealer.

I think they wear out eventually.Ambient temp might be playing role in their life expectancy as in cooler temps, they go more heating cycles.

If the thermostat is allowing the engine to run cooler, the glow plugs will be activated. So a failing thermostat can cause the glow plugs to fail or shorten their life.

I had a look at the BMWCA CPO document. The plan names specific components that are covered. It says all others are specifically excluded. By that definition, glow plugs are not covered. Furthermore, they don't cover wear, only defects in manufacturing. Even if a covered item needs replacing, it depends on why it failed. Was it manufactured wrong back in 2009? Or has it worn since? And if it was manufactured wrong, why did it wait six years to fail?

Doesn't hurt to ask, but it sounds like the dealer already gave you the answer.

Interesting..Id never seen the Canadian version....

Arguably if the thermostat WAS covered and it failed, and led to the Glow Plug failing, that should be covered. But (a) the thermostat isnt listed and (b) they'd have to buy that cause/effect argument.

Also, if a part fails to last the 6 years as it was intended, that is a defect in the mfg or design. The defect is 'failure to be robust'. Taken to an extreme, Mfgs can't design parts that fail in one year, and state "it wasn't a 'manufacturing defect' since it is actually designed to last one year and made it to one year- so not covered under the mfg defect warranty". Well, at least under USA law.
