Questions about F15 Navigation/Traffic data?
Where does the map data for the BMW navigation come from? a disc that has to be replaced to get updated map info? Where does the traffic information come from? Sirius or cellular? Does the traffic information get laid out on the map routinely or does a person have to click a few things to get it to tell you if there are traffic problems? Any info would be appreciated. edit: I am realizing that no one has an F15 yet. How about the same questions regarding the E70 navigation? Last edited by navin in KC; 10-04-2013 at 04:29 PM. |

I can only provide information based on the E70. It is a HD based systems so there is no DVD's to load. You can update the maps via DVD or USB stick but there is no "auto update" using a dynamic service.
Traffic incidents are compiled and transmitted in metropolitan areas by a leading FM broadcaster. The data is received through a dedicated tuner, which operates independently of your entertainment source. The reported traffic incidents are displayed as icons on the navigation map and in a list, sorted by distance from your BMW's current position. If you are in areas which do not have this service(out in the country, there are not updates. In my 2013(x5) and 2011(M3) you have the option of turning on/off the traffic information. This data is overlaid on your nav map. You will see icons for accident, road construction and gray arrows showing where the road congestion is. Here is a link which should provide any information which I have not provided. RTTI - Overview - BMW North America

^^^ all of that info is not valid on the f15
Traffic data is supplied via the cars telematics platform, so as long as you setup bmw assist you will get more comprehensive traffic data and not the crappy traffic data provided by clear channel via fm like on the e70 |

Map data and Traffic info
On E53: Traffic data is through FM. New map data through paid DVD update
On E70: Traffic data is through FM. New map data through paid DVD or USB update On F15: Traffic data through the Telematic System (GSM) for 3 years with a new car purchase, and after that an extra option to be paid through BMW Assist. The map data still through USB paid update (about $ 300.00) when released, usually twice a year. |

What I've read about the new navi systems is that if the car is equipped with the 80GB hard drive, it will pull traffic info via FM. If it has the 200GB it will do it via cellular signal.
The first scenario is free, second is based on subscription (comes "free" for the first 3 years of a new car purchase). |
