The fenders are so strong, you couldn't crack one with a full swing of a baseball bat. I'd like to see what the journalist ran into!

In most cases even a metal fender is replaced when damaged. Only in case of small dents it makes sense to fix the metal fender. Any big dents are cheaper to change then the auto body spending hours of labor fixing it.

EU pedestrian laws are getting stronger and impacting design of new cars. Reason why new 7-series front is high.
