Picked up Friday - 2016 X6 50i

Well, the ///M is gone. Picked up the 2016 Friday. I haven't driven it much and will report back after I have a few miles under my belt but here are my two initial observations.

Like:
Power - I love the 8 speed. It's extremely responsive. Smooth shifting and a lot quicker off the line than the E71. I was apprehensive about downgrading from the ///M but I'm extremely happy with the power of the 50i.

Dislike:
I hate the seats. I know hate is a strong word but it doesn't come close to expressing how disappointed I am with the new design. And this isn't about the leather. Granted I've gone from Nappa in the 2010, to Merino in the 2013, and now Dakota in the 2016. I knew the texture would be different but assumed the quality and comfort of the seats would be the same. The seats in the E71s were extremely comfortable. They just surrounded and supported you everywhere. The new seats are short everywhere. They are narrower in the seat and seat back. The side bolsters are also narrower, so when you pull them in they hit your sides instead of wrapping around your body. The seat base itself is shorter and ends mid thigh. Even when I extend the leg bolster all the way, it doesn't even reach the back of my knee and I'm not exactly tall at 5'7". And the seats are hard. Almost zero cushioning. I feel like I'm sitting on a board. I've spent more time trying to find a comfortable seat setting than I have driving.

I know I sound like a spoiled brat complaining about a brand new $98K vehicle. I'm almost embarrassed to vent on the seats but I expected more. Shame on me for not test driving the F16 before ordering. This is my 6th BMW and comfort has never, ever been an issue.

It always takes me a little time to get used to a new vehicle, whether it be new gadgets or different controls. Maybe after time I'll forget how comfortable I used to be.

L, Congrats on your new/umptyseventh X!

Good review, too...

Maybe a cushion on the seats?

I suspect the cost accounting dept at BMW is from the same mold as any company these days. And they are taking cues from the airplane biz, seat wise. Several new cars I have driven lately all have seats that make me say, "what bar stool did these knuckleheads just slide off from?"

Hope you get 'used' to it...and, some pics of it/you would be a welcome change from "the my X broke" posts, here.

mD,

I certainly hope I'll get used to them. I hate that I should be so excited and I just get annoyed when I try to get comfortable.

The interior and gadgets are pretty cool. The rearview camera is a huge improvement from an image quality standpoint although the distance perspective is way off..

I'll do a more detailed review and add pics n a week or so after I drive it a bit.

I own my own business and I'm guessing I'm probably old enough to be your mother.

Congrats on the delivery! VERY surprised on the seats though - you got the comfort seats without ventilation, right?

Very surprised there - keep playing with the adjustments, I think you will find a good setup. It always takes me a few months to get the seat setup 'just right'.

Any thoughts on the interior quality, the stereo, the updated iDrive, etc? Did you get the LED lights? Is rearward visibility greatly improved?

Don't give up hope

Chris -

Thanks I only have about 50 miles so not much practical experience but here are a few comments.

Side mirrors are ridiculously small and not even rectangle. The upper outer edges are cut off and kind of angled down. I really don't notice much difference with the rear visibility.

The stereo is great but I upgraded to the Bang and Olufsen. I got the LED lights. Rear camera image quality 100% improvement. AC vents are much smaller. iDrive pretty cool. It actually has the owners manual under vehicle info. It's a lot easier to RTFM

There is also a Sport Mode display in the iDrive that shows your actual horsepower and torque as you drive kind of a tach display.

I have found my seat setting but I still don't like the seats. I expect more from a vehicle at this price point. And you are correct, non ventilated seats. Dakota leather was the only option unless I did the cognac black nappa. I love the nappa but the cognac was too orange for my taste.

I will do a better post will likes and dislikes after a few miles.

I thought I'd post more observations. I don't mean for this to be negative, these are just things that have jumped out at me over the past few days.

There is a pop up speaker in the center of the top of the dash right behind the iDrive screen. Although the top is black, the inside is like an aluminum. The sun bounces off it causing an almost strobe light effect. Very distracting.

No more up and down arrows on the steering wheel for scrolling through the radio presets. There is a wheel you press which brings up the presets on the HUD. Same result but I prefer the arrows.

The door locks are now on the door. Makes more sense than in the center of the dash. The hatch release is also located on the door near the window controls.

The heated steering wheel button is now on the steering column down next to the tilt/telescopic control. I went crazy trying to find it when I noticed it wasn't on the steering wheel. I thought they didn't include the option but found the new placement in the manual.

I don't know what the proper terminology is for this. I always kept the ///M in sports mode on the highway while driving in slow or stop and go traffic. It seemed to hold me back as soon as I took my foot off the gas or while coasting, reducing the need to either down shift or hit the brakes. I no longer feel that.

Still not happy with the seat design but I'm getting used to them.

That's all for now.

Oh wait, why is it that every new car I get comes with an idiot magnet? I can't begin to count how many morons have come close to blasting me this week. Like the car in the middle lane on the highway with no one in front of them that decided to shoot into the left in front of me with no blinker or warning causing me to NAIL the brakes. Or the person last night that crossed the center line pushing me almost on the sidewalk so I didn't get sideswiped.

Oh god don't get me started....honestly, stuff like this makes me think twice about driving a nice car. I love my cars - I don't travel or go on vacation, so cars are my 'treat' per se.... and the constant construction, winters with rocks/salt, and idiot drivers make me want to just lease a stupid little Honda and be done with it. Sooooo frustrating!

I hope the F16 becomes better over time. Worse case scenario, pick up a 2014 and have at it. Most X6s are pretty loaded up.

Chris
