I bought it for an 03, M62 engine, not sure if it will fit N62.

RPX5, maybe you know what's inside the separator? Is there any valve like in other BMW engines? I'm trying to figure out if I should replace mine on M62 engine, therefore would like to know if there are any wearing parts inside.

Here's how a valve from different engine look like and its contents. Is there something like this (spring, membrane) inside the separator or is the separator just a housing with sockets?

It seemed like a very simple part. I'm not sure if it had any springs. Throw a question separate from this thread, I'm sure someone here can elaborate!

Remind me after the New Year and I'll take one apart and post up pics. I've got a nicely cleaned and prepped pre-VANOS intake manifold sitting in my garage ready for a swap on my X5 after I replace the intake manifold gaskets, valve cover gaskets, redo the cooling system, etc.
