The switch opening is slightly larger that the mic openinig, so I had to put a shim on the mic to get it to not rattle. The sunroof switch was a tight fit in the mic opening. It helped a little, but I still get people telling me that I sound "far away". I tried to get Advance Autovations to help solve the problem, but as you have probalby read, they are no help at all. If anyone else has any suggestions, I am all ears.

SG-- Thanks for trying this out and letting us know

The issue is that the slot/opening for the mic is ever so lightly smaller than the slot/opening for the sunroof switch. So when I popped the mic into the sunroof switch opening, it was loose, and could easily pop out. I suppose one could glue it in place or something like that, but not me.

Here is one other thing I noticed; via an above mentioned thread it mentioned the following 2 mic part #'s:

Old one: 84318380319
New one: 84316938762

Mine is a 84.31-8 380 338 (Neither one of those listed above)

We'll, now we know.

You can only hook up one mic.

There are pretty good instructions on mic replacement in the "X5 Series (E53) Adv. Autovations Installation Manual (PDF)" here: http://www.advancedautovations.com/manuals/

Good luck

OK, the new mic is in and the position has been switched with the sunroof switch. I can confirm that the 2005 sunroof switch is slightly longer, by 1 mm. All I did was place some doubleface tape under the retaining clip for the mic and that snugged it up. The new mic sounds much better. I have the old mic in my 530 but I gues the larger cabin size of the X5 allows for more backround noise.
