Wink Help. Bluetooth retrofit for a 2004 X3 w/ Assist

Hi gang,

I'm planning to retrofit my 2004 X3 with NAV and Assist (premium package). Can somebody tell me what's the best way to go about it if I want to DIY?

I need answers to the ffg:
1. Where to get the cheapest ULF module and what part no.
2. Do I need to remove the existing TCU?
3. Would I have voice recognition feature?
4. Would I need to bring my X3 back to the dealer for recoding?

Thanks

I maybe able to answer a couple questions...

1. Stick with the newer Visteon ULF's. 552 is obviously good, 387 will likely work well, further you go back in software the more likely you will have issues with your phone. I assume you've seen: http://www.xoutpost.com/showthread.php?t=9565
You may be able to use a combo Assist / Bluetooth module, but it's not clear if you need a seperate SES box for voice recognition.

2. Yes, you will need to remove your Motorola Assist module

3. Visteon ULF has SES (voice recognition)

4. I don't know this one.

I do have vested interest in your questions as I'm selling an X3 kit on E-bay. See the classified forum for info.
Cheers.

No coding should be neccessary in a BMW with Assist.

BMW phone coding consists of two components.

1) Phone Present (Yes/No)
2) Voice recognition present (Yes/No)

99% of US cars with prewiring for phone come with default coding for Phone and VR ON.

If you have assist now, your car is coded for Phone Present. The only slim possibility is that VR might be coded OFF, but highly unlikely.

Now in the RARE case that it is not coded, when you go to get the Key coding done, give them a list of all the stuff you want configured for your car. Don't just have them charge you to flip on ONE register.

Here is the list http://www.e38.org/B090398_Att2_CKMSet.PDF
Here is the TSB to explain this to dealers (most never read this stuff) http://www.e38.org/carandkeymemory.pdf
Here is the form that you can give them http://www.e38.org/B090398_Att1_CKMFrm.PDF
Plus add your own to the list as it is pretty limited

Don't forget as you can bring one coding set for EACH KEY. One key can be set one way and the other another way. Such as Daytime running lights on with the wife's key and off with yours.

If you have an X3 does not have the premium package, which in this case I believe you do since you have BMW assist, unless you just purchased/ordered it separately, the VR is not turned on and the dealer cannot turn it on for you. I have an 05 X3 without the premium pkg, but I do have bluetooth installed with the visteon module (btw, the car needed to be recoded as well to accept the bluetooth). The VR is not recognized. When I asked about this at the dealership, they stated that the car did not have a certain package and if I wanted VR, it would need to be recoded from the factory...not a simple switch on or off.

If anyone has more insight, please let me know.

I have a 04 X5 with assist no NAV...I would advise you to get the 05 Bluetooth/Assist module from BMW, they cost about $1,000 and you can work them for a better price. Do this and you will save a lot of headaches...Who is your provider..??
Answers to your questions.
1. forget cheap will cost more in the long run.
2. yes the present assist module goes, dealer will remove when they install new Bluetooth/Assist module.
3.No the voice module is another cost to add.
4. Yes your car needs to be recoded by dealer...
Note: Most but not all 04's can get the 05 module, to see if you can call your dealer with the VIN number...

Good Luck,

X5Strap

Just for clarification any of the last 3 versions of the combined BT/Assist TCU *does* include voice commands for the phone (if used in a USA based car). Only the first iteration of it didn't (has the -993 part #) ... but -114,-056 and the latest -798 include voice for phone only.

Note also, that the last version of the TCU BMW raised the price significantly !! The -056 was around $948, but the new -798 part is $1,780 !!

Your vehicle should be a 2005 with Assist/Bluetooth TCU because the dealer is not talking about installing Bluetooth, but programming Bluetooth (actually, it should be activating Bluetooth, but hey, they already are messed up). So, why your dealer want $300.00 for something that is part of the Assist option?

It is known that some vehicles went thru the VPC without the Bluetooth being activated, thus the dealer should pick it up and program the sucker right without any cost to the customer.

Dile a esos desgraciados que te activen el Bluetooth y que se dejen de pendejaces esas de cobrarte por algo que es parte de el carro...
