BTUM Installed - Some Questions (Long)

What a neat little upgrade...(if I can get it to work, that is

Well, to be honest, the problem may be user error and not a fault of the technology, which is why I'm writing. Here is what I did and the problem I'm encountering:

I installed the BTUM unit (very cool device, indeed...it's a V60-shaped pod that fits into the CPT9000 cradle and integrates Bluetooth with the installed BMW phone system) and followed the directions to pair the phone with the unit. It's an easy process and it worked fine after I enabled BT on the phone. BTW, my phone is a Moto V555 with Cellular One service, whom I called and confirmed that was indeed a version of the Cingular V551 shown on BMW's BT webpage. The first thing it did was transfer the phonebook to the car...very cool.

Ok, test run. Everything seemed to work. When I went to the phonebook, everything was there. Cool! So I dialed a number, the radio muted, the phone icon came up on the MID, the phone itself showed the call dialing, then connected, okay so far...umm, when does the audio portion of the call kick in? I could hear a faint sound that, for lack of a better term, sounded like a long-distance connection with no other noise which would get louder and softer when I adjusted the volume, but that was it. Repeat. Nothing.

I called my other cell phone, my home phone, a buddy's work phone and it looks like the call is dialing and connecting from the indications on the face of the phone itself, but there is no audio coming through the phone system in the car, nor does it appear that I'm getting connected, as two of the numbers I called should have rolled over to voicemail, but I had no indication that actually happened. (I musta said "Testing, testing, testing..." a hundred times!) My signal was good. The phone works fine on a standalone basis. My perception is that everything is working fine up to the point of connection, but I can't say for certain what happens after that.

Is it possible that the phone is connecting but not relaying the audio to the CPT9000 system? I would discount this hypothesis because if the call was connecting, I should have had an empty voicemail or a missed call indication on the phones I called, but there were none. On the other hand, the cellphone itself showed the calls being dialed and connecting.

Just to make sure I didn't miss anything, I'm going to go back and RTFM again, but the BTUM manual is small and limited in scope, so this might end up being an X5World fix instead of a RTFM fix anyway.

Any ideas/comments/suggestions/advice GREATLY appreciated!

Mike

An update - It turns out that when I call, the call IS going out and being received on the other end; therefore, I'm thinking that it is an issue with the in-car CPT system not working correctly or the BTUM not relaying the audio portion of the call to the CPT system and coming through the audio system in the car. I'll keep you posted.

If you don't hav nav then check out this bulletin from BMW, it is likely the source of your problem with the audio - http://bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/BMW%20...0Telephone.pdf

No luck. I printed the bulletin out and worked through it last night. The connector referenced in the bulletin appeared to have been installed correctly. I took it apart and reseated it, but I'm very reluctant to think that a poor fit was the problem.

(Note: For those of you who use the bulletin UCrew mentioned above, you need to make sure that you continue turning the two T-10 Torx screws until the radio (CD player or tape player) unit comes free...I worked on it for some time trying to free it up but didn't realize I hadn't turned the screws enough to free the unit from the bracket. Finally I went back to the screws and worked on them until the unit came free. Cheap but good advice!)

Just to recap what's going on:

1) All the steering wheel and dash controls work and the phonebook transfers;
2) The phone itself shows calls being dialed and connecting;
3) I get no audio whatsoever when I make or receive a call (although the radio mutes);
4) Calls are received on the other end, but there is no sound or voice coming though on the other end.

I'm going in to the dealership next week for service. Should I have them look at it? The system was installed on my car when I got it, although no phone came with the car. I'll post this question on the main board as well.

Thanks to all for your help!

Mike

A partial update: The dealership left me a message today and told me that they were able to get the BTUM unit to work. I still don't know why it did not work, but I suspect it was a problem with the CPT system, not the BTUM itself. I will follow up with the specific diagnosis and repair.

All good now.

The original BTUM unit itself was not fitting correctly into the connector and as a result, no audio signal. The dealership replaced the BTUM and verified that it was working correctly. It does indeed work correctly now, in fact, this has to rank up there with the absolutely COOLEST tech mods around. That is to say, coolest if you don't already have BT installed, have an old CPT9000 system and want an inexpensive and effective upgrade
