I have confirmed that I have audio present on the ELK 800 amp outputs as required. I have confirmed that this audio signal transfers to the white X400 (is this the correct term?) plug on the existing main car loom. To my mind, this suggests that the problem lies between this point and the speakers, which leads me to think either: 1 - The connection is not already made in the standard car wiring; or 2 - There is a fault with the wiring. I have tried to test for continuity with pins 3 and 8 of the plug which incorporates the CD changer inputs to the back of the radio unit under the spare wheel (thanks John and UcrewX5 for your info - vary helpful) - but can't find any continuity with the output from the amp, making me think there is a problem with the wiring. Question 1: The plug incorporating the CD changer inputs to the radio (is this plug x13321 or x01037??) appears to run straight to the back of the CD player, with only 4 wires present - where are the other two which go to pins 3 and 8 for the + and - Telephone Audio Inputs (i.e. where are they supposed to join in the loom)?? Question 2: On cars with Nav, are there any other connections not made which I need to plug in (in the same way as referred to in the technical service bulletin for cars with no Nav)? Question 3: Does anyone have a wiring diagram showing how the white X400 plug audio wires connect into the audio inputs on the radio? Very grateful for any input anyone can give - I am sure I am not the only one who has had these problems. Best regards, Jeremy. |

Pin 6 Phone in + Pin 12 Phone in - Please confirm what tuner you have and the connector layout. Quote:
Do not connect the Phone outputs to the CD connector (radio side), they must be connected to the AUX plug. In both 17pin and 40pin connectors, the "phone in" is connected to the AUX plug/connector, please refer to the pics I sent, B in the 17pin connector, pins 3 & 8 C in the 40pin connector, pins 6 &12 If there is no connector plugged into this port then get one of these http://cgi.ebay.de/MOST-Quadlock-Tel...QQcmdZViewItem and connect it up. If the connector is there already with something plugged in, then pop the pins out and connect your phone outputs into the plug. hope this helps

Since the car was not prewired for phone, it was built prior to 2002 (therefore you have the old round pin radio) and you do not have DSP my best guess is that the door speakers are not the dual voice coil speakers.
I bet once the door panels are off you will see loose speaker wire for the telephone system not wired to anything. two options. 1) upgrade from round pin radio to BM54 radio in order for telephone to play via all speakers like the 2002 and up 2) change the door speaker on the drivers side to dual voice coil, or install another speaker in the door on the telephone audio wires. This is not a common occurance as ALL US BMWS are prewired for phone, and only the X5 before 2002 had that old radio which without DSP used dual voice coil speakers. one voice coil for audio and the other for phone. Problem finally soved!!
Hi,
Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. I have finally managed to sort the problem out with Martin's help. The problems with no sound reported on X5 retrofits often seem concerned with the lack of an amplifier (where there is no DSP). However, cars produced up until 09/01 (mine was produced 08/01) did not have telephone audio inputs on the round pin radio. Instead, audio from the phone was fed directly to the front door speakers via a second set of terminals to dual voice coil speakers. What has transpired is that because my car was not prewired for phone, neither were dual coil speakers fitted in the doors. Instead, although the wiring was in place to take the audio signal to the speakers, the connections terminated behind the speaker, with nowhere for the audio to go. I have now replaced both front door speakers with the BMW dual voice coil equivalents (part numbers 65 13 8 383 800 and 65 13 8 383 799), and hey presto! System works! Thanks again to all who have helped. Best regards, Jeremy |

Jez, Glad you got it sorted,
Martin certainly knows his onions I'm amazed you needed the extra kit, my e46 was not pre-wired for the phone either, and I just made up my own retrofit loom (for less than £30 ($60) and then just plugged it in. Plugged the loom into the ULF (connected to the radio module), mic, antenna and pair button, and hey presto OEM BT for less than £100 ($200). No extra amps, speaker runs, nothing, it just worked, works well with the SatNav, and I now have Voice control too. Must be a slightly different setup on the 01 - X5, sorry about the duff info. Glad it’s all sorted mate.
