Yes, bluetooth is a separate component. It sounds like you do not have the "Telephone" option on your nav screen. If not, you definitely do not have BT. Most US cars (prior to Assist) did not come with BT, but they are all pre-wired for BT, and it is easy to install.

I have telephone option and assist option. My car was bought from a non BMW dealer and they had taken the navi etc. out and transplanted into another x they sold. So they promised me a navi. Well all they gave me was a navi, no cd changer, no BT. I know it had bluetooth because previous owners past calls were listed under telephone option. Cost wise do you think it is a better option to just upgrade to aftermarket to get all these options. I have seen the new Pioneer avicf90bt for like 450 on ebay plus 250 for the bezel...that would definately be cheaper then buying all the OEM components correct?

If you have a "Telephone" option then you have the phone module, you just need to pair your phone to it.

Like I said my original system was taken out and put into a different vehicle. The dealer then gave me the Navigation system only. So I only have the navigation box in my trunk area and no other components. So I HAD telephone, but i no longer do. So what is my best bet doing aftermarket or buying OEM components seperately?

Do you have the Telephone option on the Nav monitor?

Just to be sure, what type of car (E53, E39, E46 ... ) is this?

I have a 2002 E53 3.0i (purchased used) It has the button on the steering wheel for bluetooth but I don't think it has the bluetooth module installed. Did all of them come with that same type of steering wheel. It also has the overhead mic. While I had the car running I used my Samsung phone to try and detect bluetooth but it came up with nothing. Also I can find no indication of when the car was built. Anyone know if I have bluetooth?

The buttons on the wheel are standard regardless of bluetooth, the grill fro the mic is also standard, is there anything behind it?

If you have Nav there will be an option for 'Telephone' if the module is installed, this will not be there if it's not installed.

If you have a MID and not Nav then the MID will have 3 buttons on the right, the center one will have two symbold, a phone and 'TEL'.

If you have an IRIS unit then they do not spport the phone.

Well I definitely have those buttons on the MID (no NAV). If I did everything right to set it up it may just not work anymore. Like I said I bought it used so... who knows. I held the pairing button on the steering wheel for a couple of seconds and then started the vehicle but saw no activity from the lights next to the "TEL" button. I guess I am doing it right?? I have not looked for the ULF Module in the back to see if it is there but from what you say, it should be??

Th wheel button is not a pairing button. The pairing button is by the phone cradle in the center consol, it has the same symbol on it.
