I have just been and had my Nokia 8800's firmware updated to 3.78 ( showing dated 17/10/05) and am disappointed to say that the disconnection problem is still there with my 7th Gen ULF :-( I've been out and bought a 6230i with firmware version 3.4 and this works perfectly and the really weird thing is that this phones software looks almost exactly the same as the Nokia 8800 !!!!! Perhaps Jack is right and perhaps this phone will never work with our cars due to this Bluetooth 1.1 / 1.2 issue but I'm now at a loss of what to do. I've spent £600 on retro fitting Bluetooth to my 01 540i Sport and now another £100 getting a compatible phone so I have to ask myself how much further I can go to get what I want :-( Jesus, Why can't Nokia and BMW just sort this out !!!!!! Rant over |

UPDATE,
I finally have the answer as to why the 8800 does not and will never work. Basically there are Bluetooth Profiles in the phone and the 8800 only has one handsfree profile where as say the 6230i has two. Without this extra Bluetooth profile ( the one used by BMW ) then it's never going to work in a month of Sundays. The info Charlie Brown got about 1.1 & 1.2 bluetooth versions is rubbish. This phone will never work. :-( |

Well I hate to tell you this but if you read my post near the start of this thread I said it did not work and bearing in mind I have had a lot of sucsess with getting lots of various makes and models working with the BMW bluetooth. I think you need to know who to trust when you get info of the net. I have been a member of this forum for some time and post pretty regular,Where this guy who said he had the 8800 working with his M5 could have been a 15 year old boy who thought the M5 was a cool car and the 8800 was a great phone so they are going to work.
I am sorry that this has cost you money, but at least you have a phone that works now. |

Can you guys tell me where to locate the ULF coding. You indicate left hand side panel? Is that on the passenger side down near the footwell?
I have tried a couple of phones with no luck (05 3.0l Diesel)I actually found one of my very old bluetooth phones 6310 in the draw and tried it, believe it or not it worked perfectly. I have a 6230 on order so I am praying that it will work. The main issue seems to be BMW have not built in alot of flexibility towards their system being compatible with a wide range of phones, rather restricting it for what I would think was to originally have an exclusivity agreement with a phone manufacturer but this did not happen. My dealer indicates they are currently trying to work with Nokia to get more compatibility out of their system.

How reliable is your dealers info Jaybee? Even if I could get the 8800 to just recieve and make calls would be great. It's a great looking phone all except for the battery life. I can live with that for now.
I cannot understand why is it taking so long for BMW to fix these bluetooth issues that we and many other have. And the snap in adaptors are limited to older phones like the T39M. What an antique that one is. I'm using the T39M I found in my draw. Battery is shot and I'm not about to buy a new battery for it. It just works and I cannot see my phone book in the NAV display. I would rather one of the newer phones with a snap in adaptor if we can never get the 8800 going. I'm lost at the moment and probably frustrated with the incompatability the 8800 has with my BMW. Over to you guys for your comments. Jack |

That list is BS. The Moto MPx 220 isn't on there and it works fine with Bluetooth.

Jack I suppose it's like anything a dealer tells you, you always have to take it with a grain of salt. I think as technology increases things will improve. As indicated I think the issue is BMW built such a restrictive system to start with, hoping they could benefit finacially out of it worldwide. I suppose to the same sort of agreement with ipod? Anyway I would suggest from an Aussie perspective write a letter to BMW highlighting how far behind there system is with other manufacturers, and if they get enough complaints they may push some action further. I think that all it will really require is a major software upgrade. With the new X5 on the way, whether they decide to rectify existing bluetooth systems or just have a better product for the new model onwards will be the question. JB

Firmware update 3.94
Hi guys,
I have noticed that a new firmware is available (3.94) for the 8800. I'm probably barking up the wrong tree as usual, but you never know. If anything the battery life is suppose to be increased. So this could be a good thing in itself. I'm going to try and get it updated this week and will post a note about the changes I notice. Regards, Jack |

Firmware update 3.94
As expected the firmware did not do much other than increase the loudspeaker volume and as yet to find out the battery life. I will be testing over the next few days cocerning battery life.
Too bad. The 8800 is a nice phone. regards, Jack |
