E815 Phonebook
I have multiple phone numbers for people in my phone book, which are marked home, work, mobile, etc. When the phone book transfers to the car, I end up with multiple entries for the same person all titled the same, e.g. "Bruce Springsteen {?}". I would have expected to see "Bruce Springsteen {H}", "Bruce Springsteen {M}", etc. Is there something I have to do in the phone book to have the car recognize the type rather than display the {?} for each item? I'd rather not change the names in the phone book to include the type, since I sync my phone to my address book on my laptop. |

i always thought the question mark was the display "asking" you if you want to call this person or that person. if you pause on a name, i think it shows the number that is associated with that entry.

Carbo56, I'm having the same problem ('06 X5 w/ RAZR v3c). Did you ever get it resolved? I don't buy the other answer because that would assume you remember each contact's location-based phone number in order to be able to choose the right one. Also, it's pretty slow to have to scroll to the name, wait to see if it's the right number, and repeat as needed.

No, I never resolved it for my E815.
I think x5GuyInLA is incorrect about the {?} symbol. The manual that came with my X5 says that depending on the handset, the phone book entry on the MID should display both the name and the type (either W, H, M, F, P or * for Main). So the function is apparently phone dependent, and guess the Verizon E815 and Razr don't support properly transferring the type indicator to the car. |

Apparently, the SonyEricsson T637 supports the type indicators, check out the bottom of this post:

I talked to BMW last night. It was customer service not tech support, but they indicated a problem with some phones (some of Motorola's included). They suggested the same thing as in the other post (i.e., separating each number into individual contacts), but I just don't like that pseudo-solution.
I don't think there is anything BMW can do on their side, but I also don't think there is enough demand to get Motorola to push a firmware update that would allow recognizable type indicators to be pushed out (unless this is a problem experienced by other automobile makes). I guess I'll just have to learn to use the voice dial through the system. |

Thanks for the info. I agree, it sounds like a phone problem that Motorola/Verizdum would have to fix. I don't like renaming my entries either. I sync my phone with the address book on my Mac, so it would screw everything up.
In the meanwhile, the voice dialing works well but I wish it was simpler. Having to make three voice commands to dial a number is at least one, maybe two too many. Why can't I just say "Call (name)" and then hear the car say "Calling (name)" and pause two seconds. If it mistook me for a different name, then I would just hang up before the call went through. |

Luckily, at the time I was pairing my phone, my first contact's phone was off ...I have a lot to learn about using the system, and I kept accidentally calling him!
I've put in a support request with Moto about the problem, and I'm going to submit one to Verizon, too. Maybe if enough people ask/complain, then Verizon will do something about it. |
