2004 TCU

I have a 2004 x3 that was fully loaded from factory. It has nav, bmw assist (no more subscription though), and a TCU in the trunk. I also found the insert for bluetooth in the owners manual that tells me the bluetooth pass key. The nav also has a telephone option. However, there is no way to pair the phone. It seems like the bluetooth of the tcu is not active, my phone never finds the car. There is no "activate phone" on the nav, not in the first two minutes nor when i hold down the r/t or sneezing man button on the steering wheel. When I click R/T, it says that the phone book is empty. Is there anyway to pair my phone to the car? I read that earlier TCU's did not have BT functionality, would recoding the TCU work (Some have gone this route, I just want to see if It will work with my car).

Production date: 6/2004

i am not that familiar with X3, but can you see the antenna leads on the unit itself? if it has the BT antenna ( i think a purple FAKRA connector) in addition to ASSIST antenna, chances are, you can activate the BT function... the fact that it knows about the phone book, is kind of promising...

Ah ha. You're going to test something for me and in exchange I might be able to get your bt working. Do you know what inpa/ncs expert is?

I know what those are. I don't have them, unfortunately, and I only have access to a macbook without windows on it.

check this file out.

If you can get to your serial, you have more info to make a decision.

.....however, it looks like Sept of 04 was the first time BT was available...

yeah - so I have a theory about these 'gap' units. If it has a PK but doesnt activate, I think there is a line of code in the actual TCU. I saw it when I was scanning my car with NCS, but I had already swapped mine out with a newer unit. I didnt feel like tearing my car apart and sticking the old one in to test my theory.

So I've been waiting for someone with the same set up to come along who could try this....
