I'd love to help, but I haven't seen the solution to this problem. Fortunately for those in North America, virtually all of the X5's produced for this market region came with the phone prep. Hence, we haven't had to tackle this particular issue.
Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance, but if I come across a solution I'll be sure to make it available here.

After some further research, here's what I think you need. The kit you need to buy if your car does NOT have option S640A installed is part # 84 64 0 153 227. BMW listed the price at approximately 750 Euros (without snap-in holder, plus tax) and the installation time is somewhere around 10 hrs. It involves running a new wiring harness (loom) in the vehicle, which is why the installation time is that high.
Good luck.

Thanks for that - may try something completely different , I've heard you can buy an all in one plug in to lighet bluetooth gadget that has built in mic and speaker - anyone know of one or used one?
