As many as you would like. Upto 700MB on a 700MB CD.

I have also heard reports that WMA files from Itunes work, but the audiotext is not figured out yet.

I tried napster WMA files and they do not work. You need to convert them to MP3 using one of the available software tools.

It reads ID3v1 and ID3V2 for the audiotext. I will post more pictures here as I figure out the details on itune files

Martin....Standard pre-wire changer harness?

Martin,

I'm still waiting for my changer (and 2006 X5 to arrive) but I just wanted to be sure of something: This changer will use the standard, pre-wired CD changer harness in the rear of the X5? No special cables or interface device between the new changer and radio?

Thanks,
Chris

Absolutely. It is a BMW changer for the X5 and has BMW X5 connectors... whcih are the same for all BMW X5, X3, E46, E38 since 1999

MP3 Changer...

...That's great news. You'd think there would be some kind of translational interface or wiring. PLUG AND PLAY!

The connections are for I-Bus and Analog audio connections. The Mp3 decoder and windows media audio decoder are in the Changer itself. Control and ID3 tags are all peformed over the I-Bus.

The reason why the aftermarket changers (such as Alpines own) required a 3rd party adapter was because Alpine own changer used a different communications bus, namely Ai-NET and the older M-Bus !!

For Windows Media Audio Files:

I ripped the CD using Windows Media Player to .wma (windows media audio) files.
Then I just used Nero to create a standard data cd.
Result: Changer played back the tracks fine, however no tag info.

For MP3 CDs:

Just used iTunes, and created a MP3 CD.
Little Tip: By default, iTunes will create a flat folder structure for your tracks, however if you sort by Artist, iTunes will create a Folder hierarchy based on Artist and Album .. very useful !!
Result: Changer plays back disks fine, with ID3 support and folder/directory support.

You just need to update your radio if you want to display the audiotext. It will work with ALL X5s, but displaying the ID3 depends on the radio.
