Moving Head Unit to Glove Box

Has anyone heard of moving the head unit (HU) to the glove box (compartment) with it still being active???

I thought about it, and I think it's do-able! I was planning on a a/f nav system. and putting the unit there make it perfect~ what you trying to do?

Sure it can be done, as long as you properly extend the wiring harness.

Im trying to retain the original HU and the AUX input for it while installing a car computer (mac mini + 7" touch screen LCD). I don't want to remove the HU out of the works but just alter its location a bit....

where are you going to put the LCD? if you put LCD where the HU originally is, you would need to move it to glove box. I am thinking if mac mini would fit perfect in the compartment. mac mini was one of my idea too, and what LCD you planning you use and how you going to hold it in place.. share your opinion with me~

I'm looking at installing a double-din Nav unit, and was wondering if the HU could be relocated, too. Precious little room in the glove box as it is, but that's only if you use it. Depending on how often you'd actually access it, you could even rack it way in the back with a long enough harness extension.... Most folks want to get to it mainly to change time/date as needed, and Aux in the trunk might work fine- If you're plugging in an MP3 or something, you could cable it in with the harness to the back, and still have a plug-in port up front. Just a thought... Keep us posted!!

Okay, my position has drastically changed. I found an article on how to get the AVIC-Z1 to play video while moving, so I think I will be installing this unit, completely removing the factory HU and CD player (as the Z1 is double din) and connecting the mac mini as an aux in. I loose the touchscreen capabilities for the car computer but I see myself using the remote for front row (mac gui for multimedia) more than trying to touch the screen with my fingers... I will still, however, make the mac mini capable of being moved from the X to the house to update the library and now I can see the mini on the Z1's screen while whistling through traffic...

Let me know if anyone is interested on what I found as a work around for video on the Z1...

Note the one downside to removing the BMW head unit completely is you lose the ability to control/update the on board computer functions.
