Double din with all goodies installed.
I would like to thanks all of you that answered in my previous posts in various questions I had before the installation. Here is what I installed and a short description of the whole procedure. Head unit Kenwood DNX 7200 with built-in Garmin navigator Headrest monitors Alpine TME-M780 Kenwood Bluetooth module Kenwood TV tuner Pioneer universal back up camera iPod video integration My bimmer double din bezel I tryed to avoid as much as possible any permanent modifications in my car. Everything I done is a 100% reversable with minimum spare parts and additional expenses. Starting from the Kenwood head unit the only I can say is that it's absolutely awsome. Very nice design with minimum buttons. Almost everything is controled from the touch screen. All steering wheel controls are available and I have all OEM functions. Installing it in the dash was very easy however it took me almost half day to convert the dash. I am not gonna say the whole procedure again as it has been discused many times and is very well documented. I will only mention that I managed to cut the plastics required to be removed in order to fit the double din head unit in such a manner that can be re-positioned using some CA glue or epoxy in case I will decide to sell the car and keep the electronics. I used the installation frame that came with the head unit and secure it in the two vertical plastic pieces of the dash with four bolts. That way I can remove the head unit any time I want without the need to spend time to re-adjust it and re-position it. I just use the remove keys and pull the head unit out of the frame. The Garmin navigator works flawlessly. I installed the antenna under the rear spoiler in the place where BMW locates the OEM antenna. Again I follow the instructions posted here in other threads. I was planning to install all modules in the rear left compartment but the length of the cables made me change my plans. So the TV tuner module was installed under the back seat and the headrest monitors hide away box was installed under the drivers seat together with the Bluetooth module. Both of them are hidden in a first aid box that I purchased for this reason and installed under the drivers seat. The antennas of the Kenwood TV tuner are also amazing. They are a very slim wire like the wire that is used for the heated rear window. They are both installed on the front windshield. One on the drivers side and one the passenger's side. The back up camera is installed in the place where the OEM camera is installed. It fits perfectly and has a small offset so when the reverse gear is engaged shows the edge of the bumper so I know exactly the distance of my bumper from the rear car. For the iPod I was planning to install it in the center console box using a Dice video cradle. I bought the craddle and even if it's a very nice unit is not workable for me cause the input of the Kenwood cable is on the back of the cradle and not on the bottom so I don't have the necessary clearance to bolt it on the bucket of the center console box. So I will install the cable on the glove box as BMW suggests. By the way the Dice craddle is available for sale. Needles to say never used. If any one is interested let me know. I still have some connections to make as I am doing the installation during the weekends only. I hope I will be able to upload some pictures soon. |

Pictures
Well here are the first pictures. My digi cam battery was not charged so I this is the first set of pictures.
I still have to align the double din as there are so many cables on the back that do not allow the head unit to lock in its place. This is the only think left to do and I will do it tommorow so I will also took pictures without the bezel so you can see how the double din is secured in place. 1st pic is the double din with bezel installed 2n pic is one of the two coil TV antenas. They are very thin and the reception is exceptional good. They are installed on the front windshield one on the left and one on the right. This is the passenger's side 3rd pic shows the two small black boxes on each side of the mirror which are the connectors of the antenas 4th pic is the drivers side TV antena 5th pic shows a view of the Alpine headrest monitors. Needless to say anything about the image quality. They also have infrared headphones in case the rear passengers would like to see something different than the front passengers or if front passengers would like to hear music. 6th pic shows the back up camera. This is the Pioneer universal camera installed on the position where BMW uses to install the OEM unit. I was afraid that it might be too bulky but finaly it's hardly noticed from the rear. It helps the fact that the car is also black. It is angled downwards so when reverse is engaged I am getting an image of my rear bumper to calculate where the end of the car is in relation with the obstacle behind the vehicle. I am also planning to hook a time delay relay so when I disengage the reverse gear the image will be maintained for 5 or 10 seconds in case I will have to make consequtive manouvers front and rear so the image will not switch all the time. Tommorow I will also post a picture from how the image I am getting on the monitor is 7th pic is the iPod installed on the glove box 8th pic is the iPod screen on the double din unit 9th pic shows the double din boot screen Reverting with more pics tommorow. Thanks for the kind words Dr Jay. If you 'll do it and need any help let me know. I study a lot and do it very carefully and slowly (took me 1 month but working only during the weekends) and I found many thinks during the installation so I might be able to help somewhere.

Some more pics on how I secured the head unit in the dash for those of you interested to do the same.
I took this pictures last weeknd as I still had to fix the wires on the back of the double din unit so it could lock into place. There are so many wires back there so I had to remove the glove box and put my hand in the back and pull the wires on the side so the double din unit could find it's way and lock into the installation frame. One way or another I had to remove the glove box as I had to put the rubber gromet on the iPod cable so I did this job last Sunday and by the way I took these pictures. The installation frame came together with my Kenwood double din and is almost a perfect match horizontally between the two vertical plastick bulkheads of the dash. Vertically there is some allowance (I had to remove the upper plastic piece of the dash as well but I managed to cut it straight so I can put it back with a good cyano or epoxy glue in case I would like to bring the car to it's original state). I used the bezel as a guide in order to position the installation frame in the correct place in order to be correctly alligned. Then I only drill 4 holes of 3mm each and used 4 bolts with nuts to secure it in place. http://www.xoutpost.com/attachment.ph...1&d=1180643420 http://www.xoutpost.com/attachment.ph...1&d=1180643538 http://www.xoutpost.com/attachment.ph...1&d=1180643538 Last edited by SPB; 06-01-2007 at 07:47 AM. |
