2005 4.8is wont play MP3s

Greetings,

I am very happy with the 4.8 so far, but am still struggling with the CD changer/MP3 thing. I have read every thread the search function provides me on MP3 playback and am still confused. Can someone help?

The radio serial number is 56186969 and the SW is 41-04 95. Are there any other numbers I need for a diagnosis?

I have tried burning MP3 CDs in iTunes and they will not play. The changer will loadthe disk and spin it, but all I hear is digital static. I do not see any options for Audiotext.

The funny part is, I made a real audio disk in iTunes (not MP3) and it will play tracks 1-2 and then will hang up. If I select track 3 on, it will play nothing.

I have DSP, Sirius, and Nav. Do I have a broken changer? I believe the car was made in 9/05.

Help!

Thanks,

Tom

Do you run Windows?

I have another method of burning the MP3s that may or may not work, my current Panasonic Head Unit would not play MP3 CDs untill I started to burn them using Windows as a "data" CD. I was using Roxio and Nero to burn "MP3 CDs".

1. Create A folder on your desktop.
2. Name Folder "MP3s to burn".
3. Open Folder and Create Folders for how you want the MP3s organized... IE - Rock - Rap - Techno - Hard Rock - etc etc etc.
4. Drag and Drop each MP3 you want into each appropriate folder(Alternatively you can also copy and paste them from your main folder).
5. After finished and you have all MP3s you want go back to the "MP3s to Burn" Folder.
6. Select all folders, right click on one of the folders and go to properties. Verify that the size of all the folders is less than 700mb.
7. Close the properties window and then right click on any of the folders and "send to" your CD/DVD burner drive.
8. A window will pop up in your task manager saying you have files waiting to be burned, click on that item in the task manager and it will open a window.
9. Click "Burn these items" and off it goes, You can even name the CD.

Try this, see if it works! It did for me.

No luck with that either...

OK, I just learned that the car was built in 5/2005 and purchased in 9/2005, so I am sure that I do not have the correct equipement in the car. Can someone tell me what I need to retrofit to make this go? Do I need to replace the CD unit or both the CD and the Radio?

I did just as you suggested and burned a data CD instead of an MP3 CD and it still plays static. I'm bummed about it. Is static what is normally played when it is not capable of reading MP3 or is that some sort of error. I am puzzled as to why it wont play a burned disc with wav on it all the way through.

Is there anything else I can try...I guess it is time to buy a DICE for my 60GB.

I still like the idea of having 6 CDs full of MP3s in my trunk...

The X5 became compatible with MP3-technology in 10/05, if your X5 was built on 5/05 - it's not compatible with MP3 discs. BMW started offering the MP3 changers approximately 2/06-on. Unless you've specifically purchased the MP3 changer - your current unit is not compatible.

While an MP3 compatible CD Changer can be installed, you will need the a new radio tuner also to see text display from your MP3 discs. While this is a costly option, text display can also be found on the DICE iPod kit.

Thanks to everyone...

I guess I need to look at the DICE more carefully. Will it display ID info on my "old" radio?

Old radio

Yes, the DICE will display ID3 text from your iPod onto the NAV screen, not a problem. We have them in stock and ready to ship when you're ready.

It will require the use of a sererate device, but we can get full video display on your Navigation sysem also using the iPod or a fixed-mounted DVD player.

We have some more information on this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/vendor-forum/...reen-more.html
