IPOD CABLE IN GLOVE BOX

Picked up a used X5 and in the glove box is a white Ipod Cable that is connected to something. I plugged my iphone into it but can only play a few tracks and its very limited. I'm just trying to figure out what the previous owner did. Is this the "Ipod your BMW" feature that was added by a Dealer or just some hack job that the previous owner decided to do?

I have a 2nd hand 06 x5 with the same white Ipod plug in the glove box. Not sure when or where it came from either. Have not really played around with it much but it does work. Curious also if this was added at the factory or after.
Fares 52 what is the build date of your X?

If you guys have a on board monitor with tv or navigation system then you probably have a genuine retrofit ipod interface kit (retrofit kit No 65 41 0 409 609). I installed this kit in my 05 X5. This kit replaces the cd changer from the trunk with the ipod which now lives in the glove box, so the good news is it should NOT be a hack job, not sure if the X left the factory with these kits but they are available from the dealers and ebay which is were i got mine from. There are different retrofit kits available depending on the spec of your car.

My retrofit kit does not support the iphone 3gs but the ipod works fine, charging it when connected.

This is the retrofit cable for ipod. To get the car to recognize your IPOD you will need to create six play lists named BMW1 through BMW6. Lists 1 through 5 will play the songs on the list, and 6 is used as a shuffle

thanks so much for the info...i went ahead and created the playlists and sure enough it worked (similar to a cd changer)....i couldn't control the set list using the ipod though. Is that normal? if this is the case, I'm just wondering why someone would choose this setup over a simple Aux input that would allow me to use the ipod itself to select songs...more control that way

thanks again guys for telling us what we have

sorry to beat a dead horse here but i can't begin to tell everyone how much i hate this kit....an aux in would be SO MUCH BETTER....6 playlists that can hold 99 songs each...there's just no way to categorize in a way to make it easy to play what you want to hear...i've tried everything from genre to alphabetical listings....i only have about 1000 songs on my iphone but can't figure out any logical convenient way to play them using this procedure.....Dani, sorry i missed your question earlier...my build date is 08/2006

That's why few people have this setup. Not ideal. Remove it and install the aux input for $35 and you'll probably be happier.

QuickSilver. I do not understand if you are replying to my question but the context seems a bit off.
