Edit: I tried just using the toggle3d MDF/MDS file and applied the update to my car but that didn't work either! What am I doing wrong? Do i need to revert to an older version first (eg. v25 or v24) then back to v26? Last edited by tmchow; 02-26-2006 at 10:47 PM. |

Try going to v26.09 first. Some people found this was the way to go for them.
Also if someone wants to clean that post up, and make it more understandable, please do so. English is my first language, but sometimes it is hard to tell Martin |

Language Menu Display Hacking
I posted in the other "code" thread, but since its locked...I've been messing around with the navboot file trying to replace the non-english menu items on the nav dosplay with english. Why? There are currently people who like the British Babe voice and others who like the North American (USA) voice.
My thinking was: replace the German voice files with USA voice files (as the standard for European units seem to be to have German, British, and French) so people with European Nav units could simply switch between the British and American voice. Similarly, replace the Spanish voice files with British voice files as North American nav units seem to have American, Spanish and French. The only "problem" is all the menu items are still in the original language- German in the case of the first example. Opening the navboot file in a hex editor and searching for 4D AD 00 02 as the module start header, I was able to replace the German language module with a copy of the USA language module. (I have a European unit) I did not edit the module itself or any other menu modules, so there was no need to recalculate the CRC24. Success! I was able to select "D" from the language menu and the text remained in English. The only idiosyncrasy in the software seemed to be the country selection was "Kanada" and "?????(United States in German)" but this was obviously read off the nav DVD and isn't a function of the s/w. The other issue was the display in the instument cluster which was in the original language. Any ideas on how to override that, as it will also affect voice control too? |

@VancouverM:
I'm glad to read that you've successfully changed the language by replacing the corresponding module in the file navboot. I was just about to test that myself (I'd like to replace French) On the other hand you're writing that the cluster still has the original language, which at a second thought sounds reasonable, since the nav unit doesn't provide the cluster with the messages to display (as I understand the design - correct me if I'm wrong at this point) The bad news is that if it's true that the cluster only gets a command telling it to which language to switch, there's no way but to recode it to use another language setup. On the other hand, if it is only a command that is sent out from the nav unit, it might be very well coded into the navboot file as well, which might be changed. In my preferred setup that would mean that when I switch my European nav unit from D (German) to GB, I'd like it to have the US female voice and the US menu items (it's ok for the cluster to be in GB mode then.) I would then like the third option F (French) to switch the nav unit to the US male voice with the US menu items and the cluster should switch to GB. So, if someone with the needed insight could find out how the cluster switches its language when you select the corresponding menu item on the nav unit setup screen, one might be able to "tune" that, too... |

Although it may seem silly, I think its important to note that you perform the update from V26 to V26.09 and then pick the update you want to perform, i.e. perspective or toggle or toggle3d.
I thought because your instructions were numbered that they had to be performed in that order and it wasn't working and kept saying my system is already up to date. Thanks for all your hard work guys, the update looks awesome! Last edited by CortinaD; 02-27-2006 at 04:13 AM. |

Blonde moment for me too ?
I have opted for 3D toggle also, so first I copied everything on my v26 CD to a temp folder on my PC, replaced the boot file as described and burnt a new CD, that failed in the Mk IV reporting bad CD. I wasn't surprised as I figured maybe not everything was copied from the V26 CD.
So then I downloaded the mdf and mds files, but these only come to around 70MB, so do I upgrade to this with v26 already in the Nav computer ? I haven't actually found instructions for how to upgrade the OS in teh Nav computer on the threads, just which options do what - obviously a blonde moment as others must have found it :-( Can someone point me at them or confirm my understanding above ? thanks, Seedar |

That part slightly confused me too, copy the mdf & mds files (around 70mb), to a new cd, then downgrade from your current version (V26 ?) & then install this version & it works perfectly well. I searched the forums for a link to a V25 as i tried V24 & couldn't get it to load, if i remember V25 can be found at megaupload I downgraded to V25 & it came back on in German, my heart sank until i realised you change the language over in the menu screen. Good luck |

The MDS and MDF files are IMAGE files used in Alcohol120% (which is the software used to burn the image to CD).
To edit the MDF file, you need to load UltraISO - this allows you to swap the navboot files within the image and then recreate the correct Alcohol120% image file. Read Martin's post and download both bits of (trial) software - you should then be good to go. Mark. |
