Is retrofit NAV coding necessary ?
I spent today successfully retro-fitting the full professional nav to my 2006 X3 with new flip-up screen (previously just business CD) - pictures and instructions to follow later next week when I get time to write it up. This has gone well - largely thanks to the useful information in these forums and the very helpful people at Woods BMW in Odiham UK and Crevier Parts Santa Anna . I used second-hand Mk4 nav computer and CID control from ebay but everything else is new OEM imported from US (half UK stealer price). My question - the last step of the BMW instructions is to get the nav retrofit coded through a dealer's DIS computer. I'm aware that the Mk4 hold's the car's VIN (in my case this is probably wrong one as its second hand) but this isn't visable on any Nav menus I can find. What other things need to be set by the DIS? Should I get this done to avoid invalidating the warranty? UK dealers are very reluctant to recode DIY retrofits quoting examples of cars that had to be entirely recoded - hours of work. I've installed this for £1400 and don't mind spending additional £100 labour to complete it but local BMW dealers refuse to offer fixed price for the coding. I've tested this installation pretty thoroughly and all appears ok - nav directions and location appear to be spot on, phone works correctly through BT, even old IceLink Plus works (although UI with text on is very poor and special playlist 6 is not intuitive) Nav is running v27.0 with 2006/2 DVD Europe (High). Mk4 was from an X5 (manufactured 2006) all other parts are late 2005 or 2006 Appreciate your thoughts Thanks David 2006 x3 2.0d Sport |

If everything is functioning properly then there's probably no good reason I can think of to have the vehicle recoded.
Looking forward to seeing your write-up on the retrofit! Congrats on tackling this and getting it working.

Thanks
I just checked the nav service mode to review the state of the Satelites and other status info. All is ok. VIN is not visible. Corrected Registration Number to my car. can anyone explain the meaning and setting of the various SMS phone numbers in here. Presumable these are for assist and emergency. Also, the SMS texting function is not supported - I thought text messages to my BT phone would appear on the nav screen ? Anything I need to do to get this working? Phone is Motorola V550 Again, thanks for your help David |

Davidr, maybe you can find an Indy who has an Autologic unit. That probably would do the coding without the dealer problem.

Its actually quite cool - I suggest you see if anyone has a T630 to try to validate the car is set up correctly. It may also depend on what generation of ULF module you have - I believe I have a Gen_5 module which I had swapped out ILO a Gen_2 module under warranty as the Gen_2 wouldn't pair/work with much. |

Thanks for the info Trapdoor
I too have a very recent ULF - can't remember the part number but is was manufactured in Sep 2005. I've read elsewhere that a V550 doesn't send text over SMS - disappointing because all other BT phone functions work ok Guess I'll have to upgrade my phone to a Razr or Sony |

RAZR does not send SMS either. I have tried 4 different T-Mobile RAZRs and a Verizon RAZR, and none of them send SMS. However, a SE T68i, T610, and T630 all send SMS. I have read that the Moto SLVR does send SMS, but I have not tested. (Also, I have read that others have seen a RAZR send SMS, but I can not duplicate it first hand.)

For those that are interested, this is the latest info from BMW UK on which phones work with which ULF's (for X3). This unfortunately doesn't include info on very latest cradles (V3, K750i etc)
I understand "full" support includes SMS to nav support. Apologies for posting to Nav rather than Bluetooth forums |

davidr, when i retro fitted bt and sat nav + hybrid digital tv i eventually got my car coded, happier now that my VR can work the BT and Sat Nav
Have been using the SE W810i which shows the message envelope on on-board monitor to alert one of text messages.... if you have BT try VR for both the phone and Navigation if it all works i would then be reluctant to get the coding done... only my ULF which is 3rd gen 961 (ULF Mit SES) was coded to the car.... ie 3er Cabrio is stated in the Telematics in the hidden submen and NOT as previously stated 7er For info ver 27 software in use with individual splash screen... all courtesey of these wonderful forums.... |
