Question Traffic Message Channel

Well from what I understand Clear Channe in the US has started broadcasting TMC (Traffic Message Channel) data in select markets. I own a 2000 X5 which came with mk2 and 4X3 screen. I just "finished" upgraing the nav screen and have an MK4 on the way to me in the mail. I just downloaded the most current NAV DVD.

So now the big question is which NAV OS should I run to get TMC, and will I need to upgrade the board monitor radio to be able to recieve the tmc data? Right now it is just the version that came in a X5 with an 03/2000 build date.

Any help/info is appreciated!

To my knowledge, TMC capabilities in the X5 are only available in Europe. They have a different radio module (BM54, I believe) that provides this capability.

From what I remember reading somewhere the newer board monitor radios have two tuners so you don't have to stay tuned to the channel broadcasting the tmc data, while the there was an older radio that supported TMC (becker bm24?) but only had one tuner so you had to listen to the channel doing the broadcasting. Does anyone know if I am correct on that? If so which verson of boad monitor radio did a 03/2000 X5 come with? Did it come with something older that doesn't support TMC at all?

If i came with an old radio that doesn't support TMC and i wanted to upgrade so it did would I just need the radio or since I have DSP would I need a new DSP amp to work with the new radio?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes you are right. I changed my MK111 to MKVI and can listen to any station without losing TMC as they have 2 receivers.

I've just updated to V27.1 from a link on xoutpost.com today, now all I need is the 2006-2 Map. Anyone know if this can be downloaded or must I buy from BMW or EBay. From the comments I've read on this site, it seems the Ebay route can be problematicle!

So do you know which version of board monitor radio you have? BM24, BM54, BM 53? There are probably others out there but I don't know what there models are.

As for the new nav disk I downloaded the North American one but it took like a week ony my cable connection to download the torrent. Only about 2.15 gig but was slow because at times there was nobody to download from.
From what I hear the DVD for Europe is even bigger. I would say your best bet is ebay. I have always had good luck with my dealing there.

Thanks for the info!

Sorry, I can't help with board monitor version. I wouldn't know where to look for this informamation. Infact I don't even know what one is!

Found the link for the European verson on X5World. It's here http://rapidshare.de/users/2Z7G0T (courtesy of jjporter & Chris h). You're right, there are 28 files but I've managed to download 6 in 15 minutes so it's not as time consuming as it seems.

European cars with the Mk4 have the Becker BM54 module which IS a twin-tuner version.

In the UK, only Classic FM broadcasts TMC data, and this is set in one of the Nav menu's.

I don't know if the BM54 will actually work properly in the US as the FM bandspread is different from that in the UK/Europe. We use 88 - 108 MHz

US vehicles are equipped with the BM53 radio which doesn't support TMC. The BM54 radio will work in the USA but you will run into difficulties with the frequency band as trapdoor mentions along with the step increments on the FM and MW/AM bands.

Also, if you have Sirius Radio, the BM54 will not recognise the Sirius Tuner ....

BMW are introducing a new system in the USA, called RTTI (Real Time Traffic Information) on most of the new MOST vehicles in 2007 with Navigation/I-Drive. It will function very similar to the TMC and Vi+ systems in Europe with dynamic re-routing capabilities. No news yet if this system will be available on I-Bus cars, but given that the new X5 is moving over to MOST, and the current 3, 5, 6 and 7 are all MOST ... this really only leaves the Z and X3 in the model range using I-BUS, so its very doubtful ..... but you never know !

I think the tuner step is smaller in europe so that shouldnt be a problem; its 0.5 here and 2 there I believe?.. Problem will be at extent of tuning band as mentioned. TMC can be received through single tuner only if its tuned into the right station (classic FM in the UK) however if you are listening to CD or tape I believe the radio will automatically tune back into the designated TMC channel in the background so you continue to receive the data

Well I opened up the rear of my X5 today and found that the radio that I have isn't even becker at all, it is Alpine. So if I d choose to go buy a new radio, does anyone know if the becker BM24 that I see one ebay has one tuner or two?
