Split screen issue on retrofits/MKIV upgrades - underlying cause?

Last year I retrofitted my 2003 530i with the 16:9/MKIV nav system. The car is high obc and previously had the cd player. I am running software v27 and had taken it in to the dealer to have it coded which of course caused me to loose the split screen on radio function. I know of the downgrade/upgrade trick to get it back but on taking the car in the other day I noted to the dealer that on my last visit they coded the computer and it lost my split screen. I then gave him some background and asked that it just be noted in the service record the results of the coding...

Well... this is the second day they've had the car and they are apparently really trying to figure out why this happens so they can fix it. They seem pretty determined. At one point I had read something about the underlying cause to this problem but can't seem to find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction or pass on any info that I can pass to them to point them in the right direction? I figure if they can figure it out it will help us all out. Thanks.

All I can add is that, when in this mode with no Radio Split screen, the way that the top part of the display is written to is as though the pysical layout is as it should be with the V18 or higher software, but the data that is written is more like information written to the older software. There is one display message in particular that is used in the older software that is ignored totally by correctly working split screen software, but is not ignored, and causes text to be displayed in a particular location on the screen, when in the 'no split screen' mode.

So the conclusion that I came to was that part of the software thinks it has the new software, and part of the system thinks it has the old software. More than that I don't know.

I would suggest to your dealer that they load V17.1 then re-load V27 (but they should actually load V28). I'm sure that will sort it. Rgds.

You can't load V17.1 on a MkIV, the earliest version CD for a MKIV is V21.

I know I can downgrade/upgrade the software to kick it into Euro mode and get the split screen back - I am trying to avoid that though as my dealer seems keen to fix the coding issue if a correct means of doing so with the unit in US mode exists. I was quite surprised they held onto the car for a full day just trying to figure this out even checking the wires behind the dash.

As I noted in my first post somebody once mentioned something about special coding that had to come from Germany but I can not now find that info. I figured I could provide that info to the dealer to point them in the right direction of getting this problem officially sorted - it works correctly in new X5s from the factory so I don't see why it cann't work for retrofits. Either way they'll get a 5 for effort on this visit.

Apologies, my mistake. The earliest is actually V20.1 for the MK 4.

Gave up trying to find official fix; down/upgrade didn't work...

So I just burned a v22 software disc to down/up grade from v28 and it didn't work for the split screen. I got kicked back into Euro mode but no split on the radio. On the daowngrade I did the radio on/off/on trick but perhaps I did it at the wrong time.

When exactly do you turn the radio back on? After you remove the software disc and put back in the map disc I pushed "ok", the screen goes blank and then when the "BMW" splash screen comes up I turned the radio on and when the screen comes up, with the destination entry screen, I turned the radio off then on. Is this right or at what exact times do I do this? The instructions only say to do it when it is rebooting but that is a little vague. Should I be using v21 instead? Thanks.
