Factory POI replacement

Hi All,

I've been looking at getting more than one POI location onscreen at a time, now I see that the city/town/village centre (the bullseye icon) is always on the screen even if another POI is used.

To me this means that there must be a way to add overlays onto the map without the need for adding the POI overlay.

I know the TMC can add icons onto the map as an overlay regrardless of any POI selection, (I see the crash triangles from time to time).

Is there anyway to replace the bullseye icon and .idx file with say, all fixed speed cameras (yellow icon) and then add (as POI) all mobile (blue icon) as the POI overlay?

Anyone have any ideas?

I tried replacing the city center icon and POI database, but only quickly, and could not get it to work. The city center POI appears different to the others, the icon still comes out of the Nav firmware not the map disk (even though there is a city center .png on the map disk).

My understanding is that the city centre POI you always see on the map are not the same POI that you can search. The former are in the nav database (in the \DB folder) and are used to facilitate routing, while the latter are in .URL files like other POI (in the \TPD directory).

I had a feeling you two would reply

I did have a look at the city centre stuff like RichardP1, and then realised that, the on map bulls eye (non city centre POI) are not the same, and you are probably right BabyMakingWeather, it is a function of the map DB.

Its a pity you can't assign a png per node in the .url file as each node has a descriptor eg :
125842388,305629333MOBILE:6347@30 |||||||1http://tpdhost/cgi/getfile?FILE=%2FENG%2FENG%5F4%2ECPR&START=36360_

Just a thought, could the getfile statment not get a different "file" (inc the different png icon) depending on node type, mobile, fixed, redlight etc?

Unfortunately the icons are referenced elsewhere, i.e. by the "ICONDSC" tag in the .LSC file, with only one icon per file of POI.

Update on this topic

Hi guys,

I would love to have more than one POI displayed at a time.

I wonder if this can be reality, recognising the big steps done during the last year within this forum.
Therefore I'm asking for an update on this topic.

Is it feasible to create an additional menu, where you can check or uncheck POIs to be shown on the nav screen?

Thanks for the update

Matt

Matt, so would lots of people I suspect, but without a complete hack of the Nav software it's not going to happen unless BMW enable it themselves in a newer Nav software version. The existing hack is just changing data on the DVD, once you know which bits to change it's pretty easy. To get two or more POI on the display at the same time and have a list that you can check or uncheck would involve adding code to the system which is a massively more difficult task and would also have to be re-done every time BMW releases a software update - if someone could crack that sort of change then there are lots of other things that could be done too.

Correct me if I am wrong, but, my car came with the v24 firmware, and I'm pretty sure that it could handle 3 POI's at the same time. I think since v26 with the new colors and the scrolling map and perspective mode, BMW/navteq had to gain some memory and cpu cycles, so they reduced the POI's to only 1 instead of 3...

If thats the case, then a hacked version of v24 (with 3d) would be an ideal base to start with... hmmm, I might have a look at that one.

have you ever seen v24? I don't think hacking 3D into that will be possible, it's a completely different map layout...
