Don't give the money to the dealer, no big benefits to be had.

You could consider becoming a Premier Member of X5world, however http://www.xoutpost.com/site-announce...donations.html

..H E L P ! ! !

I only recently bought a Jan 2004 E46 Convertible (Kids and I already been egged with the roof down, well it IS Southend on Sea ) and tried to update the sat nav firmware to the latest version as it was showing 4-1/20.

I downloaded the software from the torrent link and burned a DVD R/W (I know...BIG mistake) with it via IMGBurn. As soon as I tried to update the software the sat nav just constantly reboots and the Sat Nav DVD player ate the DVD It just won't eject it. I have tried pulling the fuses, waiting three minutes and the other things suggested but nothing works.

I rang BMW information who told me it HAD to be done at a dealership and would not be covered by my warranty (suprise suprise! )

Has anyone got any ideas what I could do to rectify this?

Any help very much appreciated

Phew...

Big thanks to John who helped me through with this. My main dealer actually told me I would need to give them the car for a week while they sent it to BMW . They had not got a clue.

So...I did what John said and..it popped out. Now I won't burn it to a DVD RW +- again

What I did want to know what whether this was to be burned on a CD - R or a DVD. I am presuming a CD from what I read, but would like to know categorically.

All this and it's from a BMW dealer and I got it on Wednesday...

Thanks again
Mark

Welcome to the forum mate,

Glad to be of help.

I normally use a cd-r using Imgburn and (touch wood) i've never had a failure.

I always write at x1 speed, (it takes a little longer, but who cares right).

You can write an OS disc with a dvd, handy if the cd head has packed up, but the cd head should read the update disc OK.

Now would be a good time to have a custom setup, have a look at what I've got, http://www.xoutpost.com/305946-post155.html

Hope this helps

John

@markta: burn the firmware in a good quality CDR - not a DVD, not a CD-RW, nothing else, and at 1x speed.

Burn the images files with the proper program that understand the MDF and MDS. In case the software asks, burn in mode2, not the usual mode1 (this shouldn't be a problem with MKIV, only with MKIII, but better safe than sorry). Don't just burn the two files.

After burning, check if you see a lot of files and folders inside the CD.

You should be safe then.

markta,

I'm not sure what solution ended up working for you... and the link that UCrewX5 posted does have a number of things to try, but I think I have a solution that is even easier and more likely to be reliable than any of the ones listed on the link.

First of all, one clarification. I don't own an X5, I own a 2005 MINI Cooper S with the factory Nav. However, the Nav system is exactly the same system, such that we install the exact same OS updates as you guys do (that's why I come here sometimes - x5world is more "connected" for NavOS update info!).

That being said, I would be VERY surprised if my realization & discovery of the easy way to deal with a "stuck disc" problem was not identical on X5s, M3s, etc that use the same Nav system:

-----------------
It appears that the main reason that the Nav system refuses to eject the disc is when it doesn't like the disc, but it sees enough merit with the disc to keep trying. So it keeps trying and trying (and trying) over and over again to read the disc, almost like an endless loop. The catch is, it completely ignores the eject button while it's working so hard to read the disc!

See, when you open the door of the car, the Nav system fires up immediately... you can see the screen turn on, if you listen closely, the disc starts to spin, etc. And most people may not realize that opening the door does that... yet once the "beast" has been awoken, it will keep trying to read that bad disc... therefore you can't eject it.

So what's the solution? You simply have to wait for the entire system to go to sleep. In other words:
  1. Open the door to the car
  2. Leave the car door open... don't touch anything else, don't turn the key, just leave the car door open and wait.
  3. After a while (3-5 minutes or so?), without any further activity, the Nav system will go back to sleep.
  4. Then hit the eject button. Presto, it pops out!
The reason you had to leave the door open? So you still had access to the car if you got out while you waited. Each opening and closing of the door has the potential to wake the system up again (or keep it awake), so once I've gained access to the cabin, I don't touch anything that could potentially keep the Nav system awake, until it has gone to sleep.

Anyway, for you or anyone else who gets a stuck disc, try this method first. I almost guarantee it work more often than option 1 & 2 on UCrewX5's link (written by JV)... and it's the simplest!

Thanks to all who helped me with this, I actually did this to get it out:
Opened the car door
turned the ignition to position 1
held down the eject button

I was busy staring at the woman across the road when it popped out! (the disk that is...)

I am guessing that it eventually interupted it's cycle and responded. I think the key is to ensure the car door is open because that seems to have made the difference.

Now everything is fine, but for one thing...I took my wife and the kids to stay at her mum's all the way around the M25 yesterday, the Sat nav told me to go down 3 one way streets and also to go down the A41 to Hendon for some reason (very strange when I am going from Southend to Richmond...) anyone else had problems with the unreliability of the mapping?

Cheers
Mark

With the map routing, it can be a bit hit and miss, roads change and prioraties(sp?) change, and at the end of the day its only a guide an aid.

I don't trust mine 100% I always do what I think is right, that way the routing has to re-route if I don't like the look of where its trying to take me.
