Nav Retrofit from '05 to '01. (Doable?)

I bought an '01 last week and one of my buds has a complete Nav / Monitor system that he'll sell me. It's from his 2005 with an upgraded system.

I checked the article from the main page and realized that it's a lot more complicated to do than I'm comfortable with.
http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all-...system-x5.html

A local car stereo installation place quoted me $150 for "plug & play" installation and $275 if it requires custom installation. I also called the dealership and surprisingly they quoted $160 for labor *if* it is possible(They weren't able to tell me over the phone, so I'm bringing it in).

Here's the actual photo and the part numbers:

1) BMW Widescreen, 16:9 OnBoard Navigation monitor / tape player, in perfect working condition - #65-52-6 934 413, Part # RD1BJ01A

2) BMW X5 (E53) NAV unit + DVD Rom disc - #6590 6 951 629-01

3) (Part of Nav?)BMW BM 5 3 - #65.12-6 943 449 AI:01 - included with NAV

Has anyone done this, and how much did the installation itself cost you?

Thanks!

I had this done twice -- once with a car that had nav in it and another that didn't. The estimates by both dealerships and car stereo shops were the same as yours but overly aggressive. It ended up costing 4 hours of labor at $120/hr for the car that had nav in it, 8.5 hours at $120/hr for the car that didn't. The car should be coded for compatibility as well.

If you don't have NAV already, there are a bunch of other parts that are needed for the installation, including the wiring harness. Expect the other parts to run you at least $1000 if bought from the dealer new.

the most difficult part of your retrofit will be the installation of a new wiring harness. that alone will be many hours of labor, as the interior needs to be removed in order to run in the wiring harness. The article on the home page give you insights into exactly what needs to be done.

is it easy? no. has it been done? yes

Thanks for the tips guys!

The cheapest harness I could find is $450 on eBay.

I dropped by the stealer this morning an asked the same question. His response was killing me: "Oh no- you can't do that! It's not prewired? First you'll have to get the harness and take the car apart to put it in and you don't want to deal with that. Would you like to take a look around our showroom or CPO lot to see if there's any X5s with the Factory Navigation that you'd like to purchase instead?"

I think this is something I could live without.
