retrofit or aftermarket?

Could not get nav in my 2006 (4.4, no premium pkg)(because I can't fit in a vehicle with a sun/moon roof)(need min 40" headroom) - now would it be better to retrofot a BMW nav or go with a Garmin or Tom-Tom? What models are recommended? Thanks!

Seems like buying a stand alone model is a cheaper and quicker way to go. I was looking at the HK-500 unit.

But adding the stock nav looks really good and it adds values to the car.

I don't know that adding nav to a car after the fact (meaning it didn't come with it) adds value. IMO, I would decrease, not increase the value because I don't know what the previous owner may have messed up on install. IMO of course.

Its not like a house in a good market, put 20 grand in (correctly) and get 30-40 back.

Well having the oem navigation adds roughly $1000 to the car's value. If the install goes fine then there is hardly a difference between factory and "after the fact."

Umm okay....difference between a BMW technician putting it in and an owner. IMO..significant difference. There is nothing to justify the cost because you can not compare it, which in turn makes it entirely subjective.
